Summary:
For their latest issue, Flaneur immersed itself in the complex layers of São Paulo's Treze de Maio. In collaboration with multi-disciplinary artists, academics, and locals, Flaneur embraces the street's complexity, its layers and fragmented nature with a literary approach. The street Treze de Maio (13th of May) here is both a place and a time: the 13th of May 1888, the day of the official abolishment of slavery in Brazil. In that way the issue reads the city layer by layer, forming a multi-voiced collection of contributions that are interwoven with the editor's outsider voice that explores the reoccurring themes within them. With contributions by, among others, Karlla Girotto and Alessandro Marques, Camila Svenson and Pétala Lopes, Paulo Nimer Pjota, Guilherme Wisnik, Tatewaki Nio and Andre Collazio.

Summary:
Besides the well-known masters of the 20th century such as Barragán, Niemeyer, and Costa, there is a vibrant and surprisingly varied architectural scene in Latin America just waiting to be discovered. Cultural diversity, an understanding of materials and regional character, a sensitive use of modern technology, and innovative yet aesthetic concepts all merge to produce stunning architecture. In this thematic publication Enrique Larrañaga, architect and Professor at the Simón Bolívar University in Caracas, presents some of the most exciting single-family houses built in recent years. Amongst the architects featured are Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil), Ten Arquitectos with Enrique Norten (Mexico), Alberto Kalach (Mexico), Leopoldo Laguinge (Argentina), Enrique Browne (Chile). The buildings reveal the architecture of Latin America to be diverse, unique and avant-garde, well deserving a closer look.

Summary:
In this sequel to "Good News (always read the fine print)", photographer Jordi Bernadó revamps his personal viewpoint in order to make another tour around the world and to demonstrate that the details hidden in minute type at the bottom of the page can and should be read. The shanty towns of Brazil, the peep shows of Barcelona, the beaches of Cape Town and Sydney, the downtown core of Detroit, the ruins of Bucharest, and the subterranean world of Nagoya coalesce here to form a unique landscape. Reproduced in pairs, juxtaposing images from joint but different trips, the photographs in "Very Very Bad News" share a single fixation: contriving, by means of what can be read between two images, to accentuate the insistence on portraying the black side of apparent normality.

Summary:
One of the most acclaimed architects working in Brazil since the mid-twentieth century, Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928–2021) began building in the 1950s, championing an approach often associated with "Brutalism" but expanding well beyond it. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect’s trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Mendes da Rocha’s identity as a South American architect interested in the geographic relation between nature and culture is underlined. The book’s contributors explore his concern with the social and anthropogenic impact of the continent’s development, as well as its colonial past and postcolonial future.

Summary:
Is the idea of environment in architecture only ever reducible to 'environmental architecture'? For Ricardo de Ostos and Nanette Jackowski, tutors of Intermediate Unit 3 at the Architectural Association, the answer is a resolute no. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 'environment', in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their apporach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit's visits to extreme geographical contexts - from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radial narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.

Summary:
The Italian-Brazilian architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi (1914–92) forged a unique path with her bold, modern designs. Spanning architecture, stage design, fashion and furniture, her work drew inspiration from the International Style, which she translated into her own visual language. Fundamental to her work was her thoughtful engagement with her adopted country of Brazil—its culture, society, politics and indigenous design traditions—and her ideas about the social possibilities of design, and she expressed her sometimes radical views in her design work, exhibitions and writings. Published on the occasion of Lina Bo Bardi's hundredth birthday, this illustrated volume presents an overview of her oeuvre and highlights her iconic buildings: her home, the so-called Casa de Vidro, the Museo de Arte de São Paulo and the cultural center SESC Pompéia.
