The Soviet Union has left a vast heritage in interior design that is largely unknown in the West. Other than architecture and graphic or product design, interior design from the Soviet era has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This publication offers a comprehensive survey of the country's interior design culture between revolutionary avant-garde and late Soviet modernism. In Flintstone Modernism, Jeffrey Lieber investigates transformations in postwar American architecture and culture. He considers sword-and-sandal films of the 1950s and 1960s—including forgotten gems such as Land of the Pharaohs, Helen of Troy, and The Egyptian—and their protean, ideologically charged representations of totalitarianism and democracy. Summary:
In Flintstone Modernism, Jeffrey Lieber investigates transformations in postwar American architecture and culture. He considers sword-and-sandal films of the 1950s and 1960s—including forgotten gems such as Land of the Pharaohs, Helen of Troy, and The Egyptian—and their protean, ideologically charged representations of totalitarianism and democracy. He connects Cinemascope and other widescreen technologies to the architectural “glass curtain wall,” arguing that both represented the all-encompassing eye of American Enterprise. Lieber reminds us that until recently midcentury modern American architecture was reviled by architectural historians but celebrated by design enthusiasts, just as sword-and-sandal epics are alternately hailed as cult classics or derided as camp.

Summary:
Created for children but designed by adults with considerable ingenuity, architectural toys have long offered a window on a much larger world. In ''Architecture in Play'', Tamar Zinguer explores the nearly two-hundred-year period over which such playthings have reflected changing attitudes toward form, structure, and permanence, echoing modernist experiments and stylistic inclinations in fascinating ways while also incorporating technological advances in their systems of construction. Zinguer’s history of these toys reveals broader social and economic trends from their respective periods.

Summary:
The Queen Alexandra Sanatorium in Davos is a masterpiece of early modernist architecture by the Swiss architects Pfleghard & Haefeli (Schatzalp, Davos) and the renowned civil engineer and bridge builder Robert Maillart. A new form of architecture was forged here, full of contradictions and compromises and the result of intense collaboration between engineer, architect, and client. It stands at the threshold of modernism, which is largely characterized by the use of reinforced concrete. Apart from certain early mentions in architectural history, very little has been written about this Swiss precursor of modernist architecture. Drawing on numerous archival records, Daniel Korwan now provides the first detailed chronology of this 1909 building, thus expanding the record on the historical reception of modernism.

Summary:
Hugh Stubbins, who began his career as an assistant to Walter Gropius at Harvard, is undoubtedly among the important international architects of postwar Modernism. His high-rise buildings, in particular the Citicorp Building in New York, helped him to achieve world fame. In Germany, too, he has left behind an example of his skill : the Berlin Congress Hall of 1957. The exciting story of this expressive symbol of postwar Modernism shows the way in which architecture was politicized at that time. This book examines in detail the origin and construction of this unique building, as well as the diversity of the American architect’s work.
