Summary:
The category of the museum, as it has been understood by museums of contemporary art over the last 30 years, is in need of a reassessment. This volume reflects on the museum of contemporary art in all its paradoxical characteristics. Over four chapters consisting of three theoretical essays and a section dedicated to discussion, questions regarding the roles and tasks of the museum of contemporary art are addressed. The anthology discusses the museum of contemporary art’s double character as a site of production as well as conservation, and emphasizes its relation to different public spheres, also exploring ways of dealing with the standards that emerge from the practices of collecting, organizing and educating. Included are contributions from art historians and cultural experts Claire Bishop, Büro trafo.K, Martha Buskirk, Beatriz Colomina, Bettina Funcke, Adrian Heathfield, Christian Kravagna, Oliver Marchart, Donald Preziosi, Sophia Prinz, Beat Wyss and Artur Zmijewski.

Summary:
Prints, books and multiples have long played a vital role in the vanguard of European contemporary art. From London to Moscow, artists have expanded the scope of their creative vision - and expanded their audiences - through striking and inventive uses of the printing press, the silkscreen and now electronic media. Beginning with the explosion of mass production techniques in the early 1960s and continuing with innovative projects by young artists working today, this comprehensive catalogue identifies significant developments in printed art over the past 45 years, offering the first fully synthesized analysis of this fertile period in European printmaking. Thematic chapters follow topics anchored by leading figures like Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley and Dieter Roth. In addition to a unifying analytical introduction, each section of "Eye on Europe" includes an essay and colour illustrations, making for a total of more than 290 images by more than 120 artists. Along with a thorough chronology of the period and biographies of the artists and publishers included, the publication also incorporates two original artists’ projects.

Summary:
Recognizing that buildings are a major contributor to global warming and the critical role of embodied versus operational carbon, the book focuses on houses built from materials that either sequester carbon (plants), use materials with very low embodied carbon (earth and stone) or reuse substantial amounts of existing materials. Organized by those materials (wood, bamboo, straw, hemp, cork, earth, brick, stone and re-use), and incorporating life cycle diagrams demonstrating how the raw material is processed into building components, the book shows how the unique properties of each material can transform the ways architects conceive the sections of houses. The house was selected as the vehicle for these investigations due to its scale, its role as a site of architectural experimentation, and its ubiquity. Building on the techniques of the "Manual of section," the book is comprised of newly generated cross-sectional drawings of fifty-five recent, modestly sized houses from around the world, making legible the tectonics and materials used in their construction. Each house is also shown through exploded axonometric, construction photographs and color photographs of the exterior and interior. Introductory essays set up the importance of embodied carbon, the role of vernacular plant-based construction and the problems of contemporary house construction. Drawing connections between the architecture of the house, environmental systems and material economies, the book seeks to change how we build now and for the future.

Summary:
As one of the world’s foremost urban designers, architect Terry Farrell has an acute awareness of the significance of place. Starting from his earliest years, as a child growing up in 1940s Manchester, Farrell’s imagination has been shaped and inspired by the many cities in which he has lived, visited and worked. This is Farrell’s story, embracing four decades of observation of our built environment. Farrell’s anecdotes, recollections and musings take a nomadic journey through time and space. A walk down 1950s Broadway and along 1960s Charlotte Street; a visit to the Alhambra; tutorials with Louis Kahn in Pennsylvania; the significance of bungalows; continual round-the-world tours – all are vibrantly related through words and pictures, many from Farrell’s personal photo collection. The book’s second section explores Farrell’s early projects, beginning with his student thesis, moving on to the Farrell/Grimshaw work and ending with Terry Farrell Partnership’s first schemes. Projects include the now listed Blackwall Tunnel Ventilation Towers and Park Road flats, the Student Hostel and Clifton Nurseries and housing and factory designs. Concluding the book are recollections from architects and critics casting an eye back over fifty years of design. This book is Terry Farrell’s strong statement for the humanizing of spaces and the need to nurture and protect the best of what the urban environment can offer
