Summary:
Some of the world's leading architects are making their mark on Los Angeles's cityscape with exciting and innovative projects. Fifty of the most striking buildings are profiled in this book that features every type of architecture - houses, municipal structures, art museums, office buildings, performance spaces, and houses of worship. Some of the world's leading design firms, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Eric Owen Moss Architects, Selldorf Architects, and wHY Architecture, have contributed to the city's structural vernacular. While the projects here are as varied as the luminous Walt Disney Concert Hall by Gehry Partners and Bestor Architecture's compact housing development named "Blackbirds," each building embraces an unmistakably Californian aesthetic reimagined for a new century.

Summary:
Architects Frank Gehry (b. 1929) and Hans Scharoun (1893–1972) never met in person during Scharoun’s lifetime, yet two of their most famous buildings are intimately linked: Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, completed in Los Angeles in 2003, and Scharoun’s 1963 concert hall for the Berlin Philharmonic. Although constructed thousands of miles and decades apart from each other, the two buildings, located in what are now sister cities, share striking visual features, such as the combination of bold peaks with graceful sweeping curves. This catalog for a recent exhibition at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor in Berlin takes the two concert halls as a jumping-off point to examine Scharoun’s influence on Gehry and uncover elements common to their work.

Summary:
Frank Gehry has revolutionized the use of materials in design and redefined how architects use computers as a design tool to advance form-making as we know it. He has achieved worldwide fame for such large-scale public projects as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, but it was in private houses that Gehry first explored and interrogated the principles of modern architecture. In these houses—most notably his own, in Santa Monica, Gehry distorted, expanded, and collapsed the modernist box, exploring everyday materials experimenting with color, and challenging accepted notions about geometry and structure. Color photographs, sketches, and plans create an illuminating visual record of some of the most groundbreaking, seminal projects of Gehry’s oeuvre.

Summary:
This book takes the primitive amusements of pleasure gardens as its starting point and launches from there into a rich, in-depth investigation of the evolution of the theme park over the twentieth century. Lukas examines theme parks in countries around the world – including the United States, UK, Europe, Japan, China, South Africa and Australia – and how themed fairs and parks developed through diverse means and in a variety of settings. The book examines world-famous and lesser-known parks, including the early parks of Coney Island, a series of World Fairs and their luxurious exhibition halls, Six Flags parks and virtual theme parks today, and, of course, Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Lukas analyses the theme park as a living entity that unexpectedly shapes people, their relationships and the world around them.

Summary:
Vanessa R. Schwartz engagingly presents the jet plane’s power to define a new age at a critical moment in the mid-20th century, arguing that the craft’s speed and smooth ride allowed people to imagine themselves living in the future. Exploring realms as diverse as airport architecture, theme park design, film, and photography, Schwartz argues that the jet created an aesthetic that circulated on the ground below. Visual and media culture, including Eero Saarinen’s airports, David Bailey’s photographs of the jet set, and Ernst Haas’s experiments in color photojournalism glamorized the imagery of motion. Drawing on unprecedented access to the archives of The Walt Disney Studios, Schwartz also examines the period’s most successful example of fluid motion meeting media culture: Disneyland. The park’s dedication to “people-moving” defined Walt Disney’s vision, shaping the very identity of the place. The jet age aesthetic laid the groundwork for our contemporary media culture, in which motion is so fluid that we can surf the internet while going nowhere at all.

Summary:
Los Angeles is a breeding ground for adventurous experimental architects and a magnet for their high-profile clients. "L.A. 2000+" assembles the best work completed in the city since 2000, offering a snapshot of the region and its architecture at the dawn of the twenty-first century. From the widely celebrated Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles by architect Frank Gehry to lesser known but equally arresting works such as Studio Pali Fekete Architectsí, Somis Hay Barn in Ventura County and Godfredsen-Sigalís Hustler Casino in Gardena, the picture that emerges is sometimes startling and unexpected but always impressive. This volume collects thirty original new buildings, designed by both as yet unheralded talents such as null.lab and predock_frane and internationally renowned architects such as Gehry, Thom Mayne of Morphosis, and Eric Owen Moss. The introductory essay by urban designer John Leighton Chase puts these works in historical and architectural context, offering a unique perspective on the opportunities and difficulties inherent in building in a region known not only for its explosive population growth but also for the artistry of its inhabitants.
