Summary:
The use of solar energy in new construction has been growing rapidly, and in response to that success, interest in retrofitting the technology to older buildings is increasing. " Solar Design " features case studies of more than 30 realized projects, demonstrating how photovoltaic systems can be consciously and discriminatingly installed as structural design elements, and creatively integrated into historic buildings, monuments and existing urban landscapes. A survey of relevant technologies proves them increasingly compact and flexible.

Summary:
Infrastructure is currently a much discussed notion in the field of landscape architecture. It regards the entire urban and rural space as a network that calls for an integrated planning approach. Natural and man-made infrastructures are viewed as forming a single, overarching whole. The book examines this new and ecologically sustainable approach. It also documents thirteen international examples. The Infrastructure Research Initiative is part of the SWA Group, which was founded in 1957 by Peter Walker and Hideo Sasaki and has since developed into one of the largest and most important landscape planning agencies in the United States. Among the projects of the firm that have captured international attention are the technologically innovative roof domes for Renzo Piano's California Academy of Science in San Francisco ( 2008 ), which were planted with indigenous flora.

"Landscape + 100 words to inhabit it" is a title that intends to present a condition of contemporary landscape by measuring it through a direct and immediate form : terms, definitions, ideas, microstories, short texts, notes. It is a collection of instant snaps rather than a complete critical and theoretical look at the subject. It is a group of terms asked for and(...)

Summary:
"Landscape + 100 words to inhabit it" is a title that intends to present a condition of contemporary landscape by measuring it through a direct and immediate form : terms, definitions, ideas, microstories, short texts, notes. It is a collection of instant snaps rather than a complete critical and theoretical look at the subject. It is a group of terms asked for and formulated by authors that are not only architects and landscape architects, but also urbanists, philosophers, critics, poets, geographers and writers. It is a collection of reflections that underlie aesthetic and cultural categories as much as technical-professional values and practices. It is a Tower of Babel of meanings, each having its specific characteristics, which, far from exhausting all the issues of a particular point, propose 'listening' to it from various multifaceted standpoints. These concepts do not guide this book towards a definition of landscape but towards a search for the most suitable instruments for dealing with it.

Summary:
Hargreaves Associates has been at the forefront of landscape architectural practice since its founding in 1983, creating a narrative approach to landscape architecture that layers history, ecology, and environmental phenomena. Whether reductive or rich, highly programmed or passive, culturally interpretive or teeming with the phenomena of nature’s own systems, the built landscapes of Hargreaves Associates emphasize the power of connection to day-to-day life. This volume presents projects from throughout the 25-year history of the firm and highlights the firm's role in advancing the reoccupation of postindustrial sites, including the reclamation of waterfronts within the United States, Europe, and Australia. Featuring color photographs and illustrations throughout, the book also shows how the firm works with cultural landscapes, urban parks, smaller plazas, and gardens. Included are details on Hargreaves' innovative entries in recent landscape architectural competitions, including its stunning design of a 270-acre Victorian-style pleasure garden for the 2012 London Olympics.
