Summary:
This publication is a monography on Alvar Aalto, one of the key exponents of Modernism and the International Style. He began his career in the 1920s with buildings in the Nordic Classical style, but was drawn to International Modernism by the end of the decade. Aalto's Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933) can be counted as a masterwork of the period in the global context. In the mid-1930s, Aalto broke away from the Modernist group known as CIAM to develop his own vocabulary of form in a more complex direction and he created the free-form approach to design for which his architecture became world famous.

A skateboarding school in Kabul; a children's community center in south-west Chicago; project row houses in Houston; an open-air library in Salbke-Magdeburg, Germany; colorful murals in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro: what difference do civic architectural projects like these make to the daily lives of the people who use them? In Testify! The Consequences of Architecture, editor Lukas Feireiss gathers 30 examples of community-centered architectural projects from all five continents, to demonstrate as explicitly as possible how architecture can transform the quality of our lives. This is architecture that reveals unexpected possibilities for growing food in urban environments, for creating healthy and sustainable environments, nourishing social networks and establishing real estate value based on new revenue models. Each project is presented with full-color illustrations, texts that concisely analyze the project in terms of context, mission and realization, and an interview with a community member who makes regular use of, or occupies, the relevant building.

Summary:
Aldo Rossi (1931-97) is a key figure in 20th-century architecture. Discarding utopian pretences, his work claimed the autonomy of architecture with formal restraint, and remains highly influential both in theory and practice until the present day. In this new book, Diogo Seixas Lopes looks at Rossi's work through the lens of a term often used to describe the great architect's work: melancholy. While the influence of melancholy on literature and visual arts has been debated extensively, its presence in architecture has been largely overlooked. By exploring Rossi's entire career, Lopes traces out the oscillation between enthusiasm and disenchantment that marks Rossi's oeuvre.

Summary:
John Ronan is a leading figure of a new generation of architects that are not only steeped in the grounded, rigorous, and self-critical Chicago tradition, but are also focused on design innovation. Ronan's decade-old practice has garnered critical praise and awards in recognition of its subtle integration of sustainable technology, spatial composition, and material detail. His beautifully simple spaces convey a recurring theme of adaptability and flexibility across multiple functions that, when activated by a specific use, do not deter from a holistic architectural intent. This publication features twelve projects ranging in scale from private residences and adaptive renovations to large public buildings, as well as a foreword by Toshiko Mori,an essay by Chicago-based architect Brad Lynch, and a Q with John Ronan conducted by Robert McAnulty.
