Summary:
The study of historic preservation theory in the United States has been limited by the lack of a comprehensive anthology of literature spanning the history of thought in the discipline. While a few key texts such as Viollet-le-Duc's "On Restoration" (1854) and John Ruskin's "Lamp of Memory" (1849) have been reprinted ad infinitum, the enormous body of preservation knowledge produced since the Renaissance remains obscure to most American students, who until now have had no easy way to access it. This anthology offers classic texts from the United States, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and more, offering a broad introduction to the history of preservation theory.

Summary:
This book is about the everyday life of memorials. It explores their relationship to the pulses of daily life, their meaning within a quotidian context, and their place within the development of modern cities. Through Andrew Shanken’s close historical readings of memorials, both well-known and obscure, two distinct strands of scholarship are thus brought together: the study of the everyday and memory studies. This book explores how memorials end up where they are, grow invisible, fight with traffic, get moved, are assembled into memorial zones, and are drawn anew into commemorations and political maelstroms that their original sponsors never could have imagined. Finally, exploring how people behave at memorials and what memorials ask of people reveals just how strange the commemorative infrastructure of modernity is.

Summary:
Published fifty years ago under the title "Harpoon of the hunter", Markoosie Patsauq's novel helped establish the genre of Indigenous fiction in Canada. This new English translation unfolds the story of Kamik, a young hero who comes to manhood while on a perilous hunt for a wounded polar bear. In this astonishing tale of a people struggling for survival in a brutal environment, Patsauq describes a life in the Canadian Arctic as one that is reliant on cooperation and vigilance. Whether revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, readers will find in this book a sophisticated coming-of-age tale illustrating a way of life not as it appeared to southerners, but as it has survived in the memory of the Inuit themselves.

Summary:
Echoes of the Future is a compilation of recent graphic design and illustration that is inspired by our collective visual memory. Today’s young designers are not copying elements from classic modernism, letterpress printing, and other design styles of the past, but rather, they are synthesizing them to create a new aesthetic that emanates quality, timelessness, and sustainability. This book showcases an up-to-the-minute style trend that promotes the impression of visual longevity in these times of economic uncertainty and contrasts sharply with the rapidly shifting styles of previous years that seemed out-of-date almost immediately. While the work featured in Echoes of the Future deliberately seems older, one realizes how clearly different and contemporary it is when confronted with genuine examples from the past.

Summary:
The High Line, a new park atop an ele-vated rail structure on Manhattan’s West Side, is among the most innovative urban reclamation projects in memory. The story of how it came to be is a remarkable one: two young citizens with no prior experience in planning and development collaborated with their neighbors, elected officials, artists, local business owners, and leaders of burgeoning movements in horticulture and landscape architecture to create a park celebrated worldwide as a model for creatively designed, socially vibrant, ecologically sound public space. In this book, David and Hammond tell how they relied on skill, luck, and good timing: a crucial court ruling, an inspiring design contest, the enthusiasm of Mayor Bloomberg, the concern for urban planning issues following 9/11.

Summary:
This is a collection of lyrics and lyrical reflections upon the endlessly embroiled landscape of the city: it reveals a poetic landscape infused with the effects of topography and technology upon its architecture, language, politics and planning. It is a love poem of sorts, one dedicated to the modernist dream. In common with Alex Niven’s recent prose concerning the possibilities of "a new form of radical culture beyond the idea of England", this publication fuses scholarship with meditation, experience with imagination, memory with speculation, inviting us to "pause our vortex for a moment to consider im/possibilities". A utopia of actual places is revealed in the photographs of Euan Lynn and in the poet’s elliptical observations of a situation where, "here and there/everything is open".

The "architectural imaginary" describes architecture in its broadest sense: images of cities drawn from collective experience and imagination. The book is organized into four thematic groupings. Matthew Buckingham, Ann Lislegaard and Paul Noble treat architecture's relationship to language; "Architecture and Memory" includes installations by Saskia Olde Wolbers, Hiraki Sawa and Rachel Whiteread; "Architecture as Model" encompasses installations by Michael Borremans, Los Carpinteros, Catharina van Eetvelde and Katrin Sigurdardottir; and the theme of surveillance is explored by Jakob Kolding, Sarah Oppenheimer, Julie Mehretu and Matthew Ritchie.
