Summary:
'Building Sharjah' reveals how modern architecture unfurled across the United Arab Emirates’ third-largest city. An oil discovery in 1972 positioned Sharjah as one of the world’s final cities shaped by transformative fortune. In the footsteps of Kuwait, Riyadh, and Dubai, Sharjah faced a metamorphosis: either one that repeated the past’s mistakes or one that reimagined how wealth can build a city. Sharjah’s potential enticed an international cast of experts to create a bold, new city. As their projects begin to vanish, this book preserves them through unseen photographs and recovered documents. New writing chronicles how local and arriving residents arranged the designed, concrete environment into a home. Beyond just a local artifact, this book examines the confident promises made by global practices of urbanization.

Summary:
This book is about the everyday life of memorials. It explores their relationship to the pulses of daily life, their meaning within a quotidian context, and their place within the development of modern cities. Through Andrew Shanken’s close historical readings of memorials, both well-known and obscure, two distinct strands of scholarship are thus brought together: the study of the everyday and memory studies. This book explores how memorials end up where they are, grow invisible, fight with traffic, get moved, are assembled into memorial zones, and are drawn anew into commemorations and political maelstroms that their original sponsors never could have imagined. Finally, exploring how people behave at memorials and what memorials ask of people reveals just how strange the commemorative infrastructure of modernity is.

Summary:
The Power of Process sets out the importance of Michael Pearson and his work, from his initial work within the family firm, his teaching and presidency of the Architectural Association, to small-scale artists’ studios and large-scale hospital planning, to the first thorough appreciation of Burne House, his most important work. The title refers to Michael Pearson’s abiding concern for ‘process’ in modern architecture — that is, how the conception and making of architecture is driven by information systems, the inter-connectedness between a buildings use, how it is manufactured and, importantly how its use can adapt and change over time. As such, his interest in process puts him at the forefront of the British High-Tech architecture, more famously associated with Richard Rogers and Norman Foster.

Through no fault of his own, John Lautner's contributions to Modern architecture have been widely recognized only in the last ten or fifteen years. Even so, he still remains an enigma for some critics. We still have more to learn – and understand – about how he expanded the boundaries of Modern architecture. After years of research, Tycho Saariste and Jan-Richard Kikkert's book adds an invaluable resource for our understanding of Lautner. This book contains a description of the research and the travels to all built Lautner houses. It also contains a description of these houses and photographs the authors made during their visits. With an introduction by American architecture expert Alan Hess.
