"Mapping Malcolm" continues the project of reinscribing Malcolm X’s memory and legacy in the present by exploring his commitment to community building and his articulation of a global power analysis as it continues to manifest across New York City today. More specifically, the book explores the limits and possibilities of the archive, the political, material, and philosophical legacy of the Black radical tradition, the Black diaspora, and the state. Oriented toward sovereignty and liberation, ''Mapping Malcolm'' brings together artists, community organizers, and scholars to consider the politics of Black space-making in Harlem through a range of historical, cultural, and anti-imperialist worldviews designed to offer new, reparatory pedagogical possibilities. Together, they reconfigure how we understand, employ, and carry forward Malcolm X’s sociopolitical, cross-cultural analyses of justice and power as an everyday praxis in the built environment and beyond.

This is the second publication in ''The Walther Collection Books series'' at Steidl, focusing on a dialogue between two of the most important South African photographers of the twentieth century—David Goldblatt (1930–2018) and Santu Mofokeng (1956–2020). There are both profound similarities and differences between the two artists’ work. Goldblatt documented the ways in which architecture and spatial planning reflect the ideology of apartheid, and how the land continues to bear its legacy in post-apartheid South Africa. His investigations explore both actual structures and how mental constructs reveal how ideology has shaped our landscape. Mofokeng’s photo essays shed light on everyday life in South Africa, beyond the stereotypical news pictures of Soweto depicting violence or poverty. Deeply personal, they record communities in townships and rural areas, religious rituals and landscapes imbued not only with historical significance but spiritual meaning, memory and trauma. The approach of Tamar Garb in Beyond the Binary is both daring and inquisitive—she “scrambles” and reassembles Mofokeng’s and Goldblatt’s photographs, blurring the boundaries between them and creates juxtapositions and insights that challenge prevailing views of these established images. By delineating 15 viewpoints around the themes of “Earthscapes,” “Edifices,” and “Sociality,” Garb decontextualizes the work and creates a platform for comparing and rethinking the artists’ practices.

School is the first book to examine this institutional building’s modern growth on a global scale. Ian Grosvenor and Catherine Burke demonstrate how school buildings help organize and manipulate time and space for teachers and students, using methods ranging from bells to lines to lesson plans. They reveal the ways in which schools, by their actual physical situation—surrounded by swathes of green or butting up against other urban structures, in neighborhoods stratified by class or segregated by race—make clear their place in society as fragmented sites of cultural memory and creation. The authors further consider how new technologies and continuing globalization will inevitably force us to rethink our notions of school—and school buildings. In the twenty-first century, these shifts represent a radically new context for education. This brief volume is the latest and reportedly last collection of essays by German novelist and critic Sebald, who has seemed more prolific since his death in 2001 than in life. Despite the masterful translation, these essays fail to cohere, though they contain elements common to most of Sebald's work: an integration of art, politics and memory, framed by the writer's own curmudgeonly presence. The essays, however, feel unfinished, lacking polish and structural integrity. The collection is split into two parts, "Prose" and "Essays," with the first—a series of considerations of the landscape, history and social milieu of the island of Corsica—by far the more successful. The second, longer section contains an assortment of literary critical pieces, some detailed, such as a long essay about novelists writing about the destruction of German cities during WWII; others discursive, such as an apparently unfinished review of a book about Kafka's relationship with film that wanders from films Sebald himself viewed to films Kafka may or may not have seen. Although Sebald was a beautiful and intelligent writer, it's hard to see how these essays will appeal to anyone outside of scholars and already committed Sebald fans eager to read every word he ever set to paper.

This device of presenting the work in pairs has been contrived to emphasize the remarkable degree of correspondence between art and architecture and to highlight the common conceptual and physical qualities of the projects. Throughout, designers, landscape architects and lighting engineers are included in the architectural category, as their working structures, contractually defined to provide a quantifiable design service to the client, are alike. The works are assembled according to their design concept and arranged in eight sections, which identify the most important characteristics of each project. 'Barometer' focuses on the connection of the work to its natural environment, and 'Passage' investigates the relationship of space perception to physical movement. 'Reflection' looks at the suggestive power of the double image, and 'Light' compiles examples of the material quality of luminous matter.
