AP056.S1.1997.PR10
Description:
This project series documents a competition entry for the Holt Renfrew flagship store on Bloor Street in Toronto in 1997. The office identified the project number as 69705. This project consisted of a proposal for the exterior facades and rooftop terrace for the high-end department store. The proposal focused greatly on movement that would naturally attract passing pedestrians and drivers to the store's entrances and window merchandizing. The main entrance would be comprised of glass doors with custom bronze pulls, sheltered by a steel and glass canopy and sandwiched between limestone surfaces. Above the main doors would be a two-storey window display and surfaces that could be manipulated to display brand logos and other graphics. This also allowed natural light to shine into the main atrium of the store's interior. Windows at street level, used for visual marketing, would be punched into limestone facades and accentuated with canvas awnings, creating an intimate customer experience. The new rooftop terrace would be created through an addition to the fourth floor, setback from the other levels, and sheltered by a projecting roof. The terrace would be lined in a continuous rim of evergreen hedges. Addition entrances, new lighting fixtures, and interior window displays were also proposed in this project. The project is recorded through drawings, watercolour paintings and textual records dating from 1997. The drawings consist of sketch elevations and perspectives, while the paintings were used for presentation purposes. The textual records consist of the project proposal with associated digital renderings.

AP177.S2
Description:
This series contains additional CAD and 3D modeling work made by David Ruy for RUR Architecture in order to achieve the design of architectural elements of the Kansai-kan National Diet Library competition. Files are identified as parts or elements of the building such as “upper slab”, “pig” (term used for the theater), “topo[graphical] lines”, “spiral” (a part of the store), “diagram”, “catwalks”, “ramps”, etc. File names are similar to the ones found in AP177.S1, which could indicate that the files represent different versions of the digital drawings. Under the directory FINAL PLANS, file names suggest digital drawings presenting more substantial parts of the building such as “conference level”, “plan”, and “hanging volume”. Files were created using form*Z and Alias and were saved in FMZ, DXF and OBJ formats. Series also includes, in the “scans” directory, digitized images, in JPEG format, of manual drawings of the upper and lower slab with topographical lines, the spiral and the placing of support points.

AP056.S1.1995.PR02
Description:
This project series documents the Providence Healthcare Centre in Scarborough, Ontario from 1995-2000. The office identified the project number as 9504. This project, headed by Marianne McKenna in joint-venture with Montgomery and Sisam Architects, consisted of a long-term care facility on the Healthcare Centre campus located at the corner of St. Clair East and Warden Avenues. The facility diverged from the traditional institutional model to house 288 residents in a more residential setting. Bay windows, porches and chimneys were borrowed from residential architecture to contribute to this effect. The "houses," accommodating 18 residents each, were four-storeys high and arranged in two L-shaped wings with landscaped gardens in their interior courtyards. A double-height Great Hall joined the two volumes at the building's centre, which was built to house a variety of social and recreational activities for the residents. A chapel, hair salon, café and general store were also included. The project was also known as the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence. The project is recorded through drawings and presentation watercolour paintings dating from 1995-1999. The drawings are mostly originals and include a large number of sketches along with presentation renderings, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives and details.
