Summary:
This book provides essential introductory information for designers and interior designers. From the realm of interior design, for example, it deals with ceilings, floors, doors, windows, stairs, etc., from that of material science, with carpets, wallpaper, wall paint, glass, wood materials, stone, and concrete. It also presents architectural drawing: techniques of representation, descriptive geometry, technical drawing, standard dimensions, signs and symbols, and mathematical foundations; attention is also given to the fundamentals of graphic design, preparing documents for publication, file formats, and color systems. All of this is generously leavened with practical examples; original essays by Ruedi Baur, Axel Kufus, Norbert Rademacher, Martin Kunz, and others; and thought-provoking quotations. If they want to, readers may separate the pages of the Japanese binding, this way they get room to add their personal notes and comments.

Summary:
Fashion is political. From the red carpets of the Met Gala to online fast fashion, clothes tell a story of inequality, racism and climate crisis. In this book, Tansy E. Hoskins unpicks the threads of capitalist industry to reveal the truth about our clothes. Fashion brands entice us to consume more by manipulating us to feel ugly, poor and worthless, sentiments that line the pockets of billionaires exploiting colonial supply chains. Garment workers on poverty pay risk their lives in dangerous factories, animals are tortured, fossil fuels extracted and toxic chemicals spread just to keep this season's collections fresh. This volume goes beyond ethical fashion and consumer responsibility showing that if we want to feel comfortable in our clothes, we need to reshape the system and ensure this is not our last season.

Summary:
In the middle of the salt-frosted Afghan desert, in a village so remote that Google can’t find it, a woman squats on top of a loom, making flowers bloom in the thousand threads she knots by hand. Here, where heroin is cheaper than rice, every day is a fast day. B-52s pass overhead—a sign of America’s omnipotence or its vulnerability, the villagers are unsure. They know, though, that the earth is flat—like a carpet. Anna Badkhen first traveled to this country in 2001, as a war correspondent. She has returned many times since, drawn by a land that geography has made a perpetual battleground, and by a people who sustain an exquisite tradition there. Through the four seasons in which a new carpet is woven by the women and children of Oqa, she immortalizes their way of life much as the carpet does—from the petal half-finished where a hungry infant needs care to the interruptions when the women trade sex jokes or go fill in for wedding musicians scared away by the Taliban.

Summary:
The Wiener Werkstätte, founded in Vienna in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, became the international trademark for art as well as arts-and-crafts in the twentieth century. The history of the Wiener Werkstätte is told in this volume, which features historic photographs (some of them published for the first time here), documents and original texts selected by experts from the MAK (where the Wiener Werkstätte archives have been housed since 1955). Full-page illustrations feature outstanding examples of Wiener Werkstätte objects, covering architecture, furniture, ceramics, glass, books, posters, postcards, carpets, jewelry, fashion and print design. The book also focuses on the innovative "total concept" used by this avant-garde association to establish an early "consumer culture," since the Werkstätte was one of the first organizations to develop a corporate identity that followed a product through every stage from concept and development to marketing.

Summary:
Founded 100 years ago in Vienna, the Wiener Werkstätte "Vienna Workshops" was an idealistic movement to unite the fine and applied arts with the goal of creating beautifully designed and crafted objects for every purpose. Begun by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the movement eventually involved hundreds of artists and craftsmen working in architecture, furniture design, tableware, metalwork, ceramics and glass, books, posters, carpets, jewelry, fabrics, and haute couture, not to mention painting and the traditional fine arts. This generously illustrated, compact book offers as complete a record as we are ever likely to see of the group's astonishingly creative work, from complex, integrated environments such as Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna to individual objects such as enameled glass stemware by Otto Prutscher and vibrantly coloured postcards by Oskar Kokoschka. "Wiener Werkstätte" provides a comprehensive overview of this fascinating movement, one of the high points of modern design history.

Summary:
A smartly designed and beautifully illustrated look at the life and work of an elusive and influential designer and architect Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was a versatile designer and architect who navigated numerous literary and artistic circles over the course of her life. This handsome volume designed by Irma Boom chronicles Gray’s career as a designer, architect, painter, and photographer. The book’s essays, featuring copious new research, offer in-depth analysis of more than 50 individual designs and architectural projects, accompanied by both period and new photographs. Gray struggled for acceptance as a largely self-taught woman in male-dominated professions. Although she is now best known for her furniture, lighting, and carpets, she dedicated herself to many architectural and interior projects that were both personal and socially driven, including the Villa E 1027, the iconic modern house designed with Jean Badovici, as well as economical and demountable projects, such as the Camping Tent. Exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery February 28 - July 12, 2020.

Summary:
Irish-born designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is widely known today as a pioneer of both Art Deco and Modernism. In a career spanning nearly 80 years she produced innovative designs for furniture, lighting, carpets, interiors and architecture. Much less well known is that throughout her life as a designer and an architect she never stopped producing small paintings and drawings. This book is the first to focus on Eileen Gray's important but essentially private work as a painter. Eileen Gray considered herself a designer and an architect, not a painter: she viewed her work as a painter with great modesty, treating it as a private occupation and a vehicle for artistic expression during periods when she could not design furniture. Much of her artwork has disappeared, either lost in the Second World War or destroyed by the artist herself. But a body of works on paper, produced between the 1920s and the 1950s, has survived: elegant, geometric drawings and gouaches of muted tonality and subtle power. This book, which reproduces unseen material from the Eileen Gray archive and draws on Gray's correspondence with her niece Prunella Clough on the nature of painting, will be a revelation to her many followers and admirers.
