Its immersive habitats range from the windswept ice of Greenland's musk ox to the quiet bamboo forests of Kenya's bongo antelope. "Fabricating wilderness", a PST ART project, is the first book to explore the art, science and history of NHM's remarkable habitat groups. Drawing upon new research, this behind-the-scenes tour is illustrated by both contemporary photographs and archival images. It takes readers through the origin of dioramas and the turbulent early history of NHM's halls, while also introducing the gifted artists who painted picturesque background murals and meticulously recreated every natural detail. Even at 100 years old, the story of NHM's dioramas is not over.

Summary:
in her first book, Simard brings us into her world, the intimate world of the trees, in which she brilliantly illuminates the fascinating and vital truths—that trees are not simply the source of timber or pulp but are a complicated, interdependent circle of life; that forests are social, cooperative creatures connected through underground networks by which trees communicate their vitality and vulnerabilities with communal lives not that different from our own. Simard describes up close—in revealing and accessible ways—how trees, living side by side for hundreds of years, have evolved; how they perceive one another, learn and adapt their behaviors, recognize neighbors, and remember the past; how they have agency about their future; how they elicit warnings and mount defenses, compete and cooperate with one another with sophistication: characteristics previously ascribed to human intelligence, traits that are the essence of civil societies. It is a testament to how deeply human scientific inquiry exists beyond data and technology: it’s about understanding who we are and our place in the world.

Summary:
Conceived as an experiment that would apply the new "science" of city planning to a suburban setting, Forest Hills Gardens was created by the Russell Sage Foundation to provide housing for middle-class commuters as an alternative to cramped flats in New York City. Although it has long been recognized as one of the most influential planned communities in the United States, this is the first time Forest Hills Gardens has been the subject of a book. Susan L. Klaus's fully illustrated history chronicles the creation of the 142-acre development from its inception in 1909 through its first two decades, offering critical insights into American planning history, landscape architecture, and the social and economic forces that shaped housing in the Progressive Era. Klaus focuses particularly on the creative genius of Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., who served as planner and landscape architect for the project. Drawing on his father's visionary ideas but developing his own perspective, the younger Olmsted redefined planning for the modern era and became one of the founders of the profession of city planning in the United States.
