Summary:
This collection of essays by architect Mario Gooden investigates the construction of African American identity and representation through the medium of architecture. These five texts move between history, theory, and criticism to explore a discourse of critical spatial practice engaged in the constant reshaping of the African Diaspora. African American cultural institutions designed and constructed in recent years often rely on cultural stereotypes, metaphors, and clichés to communicate significance, demonstrating "Africanisms" through form and symbolism?but there is a far richer and more complex heritage to be explored. Presented here is a series of questions that interrogate and illuminate other narratives of "African American architecture," and reveal compelling ways of translating the philosophical idea of the African Diaspora's experience into space.

Summary:
The evolution of contemporary environmental architecture has outstripped simple labels. A deeper pattern is emerging where the world's most innovative buildings are a response to place. They resolve the complex intertwining of the site, people and environment, providing a provocative observation of the future of architecture. By starting with the site these projects maximize the natural and cultural resources available and are humancentric. The book explores firsthand how Spain "wraps" commercial buildings, Japan "condenses" micro homes and Australia "unfolds" aggressive design solutions in a climate of extremes. Germany, Cascadia, Denmark, and Mexico are also featured. 30 selected projects provide the antidote to the legacy of the modernist movement of generic, technology driven built environments.

Summary:
The towns and cities that we inhabit are the survivors of a much larger world that was never built--of visions of the future that remain on paper due to lack of funds, political changes, or because they were technically ahead of their time. How might the world look today had the realities of history been different? And how close will the architecture of the future be to that already familiar from science fiction films and the fantastic virtual environments of computer games? "Fantasy Architecture" proposes answers to these questions by focusing on 130 imagined buildings, structures, and schemes from the late medieval period to the present. Artists and architects include Robert Adam, Archigram, Charles Barry, Étienne-Louis Boullée, William Chambers, FAT, Foreign Office Architects, Foster and Partners, Ernö Goldfinger, Louis Hellman, Inigo Jones, Berthold Lubetkin, Edwin Lutyens, Eric Mendelsohn, Nils Norman, Claes Oldenburg, Joseph Paxton, Sir John Soane, Softroom and Paolo Soleri.~Essayists include Neil Bingham, previously Assistant Curator of the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) Drawings Collections, London and author of monographs on Christopher Nicholson and C.A. Busby; Clare Carolin, Exhibitions Curator at the Hayward Gallery in London; Rob Wilson, Curator at the RIBA Gallery; and architect Peter Cook, professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture and former member of the group Archigram, who offers a personal text.

Cutting-edge architecture, design, planning, public works, and education leaders illustrate the value of a new architectural strategy. Summary:

Summary:

Summary:
In the course of the 20th century it became increasingly clear that architecture is by no means a timeless medium. The late 1960s in particular were marked by research into techniques that would allow buildings to be adapted to suit the requirements of the day. This often led to buildings that were programmatically neutral and characterless. The new challenge facing architects is designing for the unknown, for the unpredictable. 'Form follows function' is giving way to concepts like polyvalence and semi-permanence. New spatial and constructional structures generate freedom, taking time as their departure-point. Alongside theoretical reflections on such time-based architecture, this book illustrates countless projects involving the time factor, ranging from Shigeru Ban's Naked house, an apartment building in Malmö by Gert Wingardh and Kas Oosterhuis's Emotive house to OMA's mixed-use complex 'De Rotterdam'.
