Daniel Marques was born in 1950 in Aarau, Switzerland. He studied under Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and went on to found his own office in Lucerne in 1977. Besides working as an architect he has taught at various schools of architecture and in 2000 he became professor at the Technical University in Graz. This publication accompanies an exhibition on Daniel Marques' work at the Architecture Gallery Lucerne. Along with photographs by Hannes Henz, Zurich, it documents and provides in-depth analyses of five residential buildings, all of which have been realised in the last few years. Martin Steinmann commented "The reduction that determines the architecture of Daniele Marques - at least in these houses - turns out to be a method of providing the things -with intensity: by postponing the moment in which they transform into specific meanings."

Summary:
What began as an academic initiative to improve the quality of life of the poor strata of the population has now become a professional “do tank” offering services that cover the entire spectrum of urban development. The celebrated Chilean architect, winner of the 2016 Pritzker Prize and Director of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, Alejandro Aravena (born 1967) founded Elemental in 2001 in his hometown with the goal of alleviating social deprivation directly instead of hoping for a balance of income relations. Besides building public facilities and public housing, Elemental also develops new approaches for the reorganization of resources and the potential of cities by means of projects devoted to infrastructure and transportation. This volume, first published in 2013 and now back in print, documents the social activity and history of the international architectural team and sheds light on its financing strategies, for example through participatory building.

Summary:
Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) is regarded internationally as one of the most important Dutch architects. As director of Public Works and City Architect to Hilversum, Dudok realized in that municipality not only his world-famous City Hall but also a welter of smaller projects including public baths, a library, housing, schools, a sports park and a cemetery. It was in this period that Dudok developed his own idiom, marked by compositions of cubic volumes. Besides his Hilversum buildings, others he built in Rotterdam, Paris and Velsen have been the subject of great interest. They are regarded as exemplifying an architecture that appeals not only to the professional world but also to the public at large. This compact though well illustrated volume gives a complete overview of the major works by this architect who succeeded in striking a unique balance between modernism and tradition.

Summary:
This book accompanies Saying It, an exhibition by artists Mieke Bal & Michelle Williams Gamaker and Renate Ferro at the Freud Museum, London, curated by Joanne Morra. Besides images, and descriptions of the works in the exhibition written by the artists themselves, the book contains new essays by Cathy Caruth, Marjorie Garber, Miguel Á. Hernández-Navarro, Ranjana Khanna and Joanne Morra, as well as a foreword by Carol Seigel, Director of the Freud Museum. Together, the artists’ words and those of the other authors underscore the significance of Saying It as what Morra terms a ‘site-responsive’ exhibition : not only do Bal & Williams Gamaker and Ferro shed light on key concepts of psychoanalysis (psychosis, transference, screen memories), but they reveal new layers of narrative and meaning enfolded in the site where their work is displayed, namely the former home of Anna and Sigmund Freud, now a world-renowned museum and archive.

Summary:
An open city without borders that is capable of flowing out in all directions to allow its residents to move freely and flexibly: this fascinating utopian conception of architectural and lifeworld growth formed the starting point for Constant’s Situationist project New Babylon. Between 1956 and 1974, the Dutch painter and cofounder of the avant-garde movements Cobra and the Situationist International worked on numerous models, paintings, drawings and collages for the purpose of depicting his vision of the nomadic city of the future. This catalogue focuses not only on New Babylon’s architectural aspects but embraces them as an artist’s synthesis of the arts. Besides the models, drawings and collages, attention is also given to the designs in order to trace Constant’s artistic process. This not only provides extensive insight into utopian urban planning, but to a greater degree into a mode of thought and imagination. The book includes an interview with Rem Koolhaas on Constant’s pioneering project.

Summary:
Since the introduction of the personal computer in the early 1980s, many objects have been designed to have capabilities well beyond their immediate use or appearance. Whether openly and actively or in subtle, subliminal ways, these objects talk to us, and we have come to expect interaction with them. Contemporary designers, besides giving objects form and function, write their initial scripts--the foundation for useful and satisfying conversations. This publication focuses on projects that involve such direct interaction--including interfaces, websites, video games, devices and tools, and information systems--as well as installations that establish practical, emotional, or even sensual connections to cities, companies, governmental institutions, or other individuals. The featured objects range in date from the late 1980s to today, with particular attention given to the last five years and projects currently in development. Organized thematically, it introduces design practices that are increasingly crucial to our world and demonstrates how rich and deep the influence of design will be on our future.

Summary:
This monograph brings together the work of the Spanish architect and urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales in book form for the first time. The publication concentrates on his most important projects and realizations of recent years. Solà-Morales has achieved successful interventions in the urban landscape in many places in Europe: from Antwerp to Trieste, from Groningen to Porto, and from Barcelona to The Hague. For Solà-Morales the city does not consist of abstractions, but of concrete, tangible things. His projects could be regarded as an urban architecture, at the interface of architecture and urban planning. By intervening in this physical reality in a precise manner, with a building, with public space, or sometimes with nothing more than the layout of a public space, but always with concrete things, Solà-Morales effects changes in the city that often transcend the physical or spatial dimensions of the intervention. All the projects are documented extensively in word and image. Besides texts by Manuel de Solà-Morales himself, the book includes a comprehensive essay by Kenneth Frampton about the architect's work and ideas.
