This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation--from the basics of "How to Draw a Line" to the complexities of color theory--provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum.

Summary:
In Architecture or Techno-Utopia, Felicity Scott traces an alternative genealogy of the postmodern turn in American architecture, focusing on a set of experimental practices and polemics that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Scott examines projects, conceptual work, exhibitions, publications, pedagogical initiatives, and agitprop performances that had as their premise the belief that architecture could be ethically and politically relevant. Although most of these strategies were far from the mainstream of American architectural practice, Scott suggests that their ambition-the demonstration of architecture's ongoing potential for social and political engagement-was nonetheless remarkable.

Summary:
This book, a reflection on Herman Hertzberger’s legacy, spanning from 1959 to today, is as much about making architecture as it is about world-making. The Dutch architect never considered his works as stand-alone objects, but rather as parts of webs of connections on different scales. In this collection of texts, photographs, drawings, his own work, and architecture and art by others, all of these layers come together to form a universe of inspirations, ideas, and solutions – in Hertzberger’s words, his ‘musée imaginaire’. Edited by Suzanne Mulder and Hans Ibelings, the book is written and compiled by Hertzberger himself and features an essay by Thomas Hertzberger.

Summary:
"Breathing Space" is a compelling and wide-ranging analysis of pneumatic phenomena in modern culture. Architect and historian Tim Altenhof brilliantly explores the physiology of breathing and its reciprocal relationship to bodies and buildings, both of which share a common atmosphere. Because breathing is controlled by the autonomic nervous system and cannot be willfully overridden, it takes place unconsciously and involuntarily—most of the time. However, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, attitudes toward breathing changed significantly. Breathing became a widely investigated cultural and physiological phenomenon and was the basis for techniques and bodily practices that heightened pulmonary awareness. New understandings of air pollution and disease stimulated a widespread preoccupation with ventilation, impacting architecture in countless ways. Altenhof’s close readings of built structures show how the science of breathing was incorporated into architecture, whether in the design of factories, residences, or medical facilities. The lungs form a major part of the respiratory system and like no other organ tie the living body directly to its surroundings. Yet the role of lungs also poses a topological problem: engaging in atmospheric transfer, they dissolve the division between inside and outside, and despite being an internal organ, they sustain a permanent and living connection to the external world. This ambiguity and permeability constitute the spatial dimension of breathing.

Summary:
Wood is one of the most popular and desirable building materials on the contemporary scene, its special qualities serving as a reminder of our connection to the physical world in an era where virtual reality has crept into almost every facet of day-to-day life. Featured here are over thirty examples of the most expressive and inventive uses of wood in design and architecture from all over the world. An inviting fireplace perch set beneath shelves of natural maple that stretch to the ceiling; a striking geometric studio sits nestled, half-hidden amidst the swampy creeks and overgrown scrub oaks that grow along Florida's eastern seaboard. In over 360 spectacular photos, from Tadao Ando's Museum of Wood to Edward Cullinan's Westminster Lodge, each building is remarkably fresh and distinctly original. Wood serves not only as a document of present ingenuity in the craft, but as a signpost pointing toward an entirely new direction in architecture.

Summary:
Tadao Ando is the most revered Japanese architect at work today. Beloved and admired for his powerful, meditative spaces and his sensual and yet refined use of the materials of the modern trade - wood, steel, concrete, glass - Ando's work resonates with profound intelligence, unpretentious elegance, and an almost palpable sense of harmony. "Tadao Ando at Naoshima: art, architecture, nature" showcases the latest work in an on going process of building by Tadao Ando at the Naoshima Island Art Complex. Featured here is Ando's recently completed Chichu Art Museum, an underground facility built on the small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. With respect for the landscape and the traditional use of the land as terraced salt fields, Ando adapted the architecture to the topography, by burying much of the complex volume below the ground.
