Summary:
Portuguese architecture, and its place on the international scene, has been receiving a lot of attention in the specialised press for some time now. The work of such great Portuguese architects as Fernando Távora, Álvaro Siza and Gonçalo Byrne has formed generations of internationally known figures, figures like Eduardo Souto de Moura, Adalberto Dias, Carrilho de Graça and Álvaro Rocha. The aim of this issue of 2G is to present the architecture of a generation of architects whose work opens up new perspectives on Portuguese architecture, despite the latter being usually submitted to the scrutiny of the masters. Young architects who would form a more or less homogeneous "third generation", one caught between its ongoing marginality in geographical terms and an attentiveness to what is happening on the international scene.

Summary:
Catastrophes, bombed-out cities, large-scale political transformations: “Image complexes” of humanitarian and ecological upheaval document the world as a sequence of catastrophes. But who decides how events are presented, determines the resolution of our visual worlds, and controls the circulation or censorship of images? Eyal and Ines Weizman trace the history of the before-and-after image from nineteenth-century photography to contemporary satellite images and discover a gap that not only conceals the devastating event: it is the human subject itself that is in danger of disappearing from the images. Does humanitarian work, the documentation and reconstruction of war crimes, in which people’s fates and rights should be at the center of attention, paradoxically enter a post-human phase? How can the gap between images become a site of critical counter-reading rather than a symbol of erasure? In the context of their current research, Eyal and Ines Weizman discuss the history, present, and future of the paradigm of the before-and-after image in an exclusive conversation with Marie Glassl.

Summary:
Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their concept is strongly reflected in their architecture and equipment. This is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, and the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

Summary:
A refugee from Nazi Germany, Nikolaus Pevsner became a central player in the intellectual and cultural life of his adopted country. Almost impossibly energetic, efficient and effective, his contribution both to scholarship and to the public appreciation of art and architecture was immense. In addition to the famous Buildings of England series - known commonly as "Pevsner" - he wrote standard textbooks, held professorships, delivered the Reith lectures, promoted with equal fervour Victorian and Bauhaus architecture; and for over twenty-five years from the end of the war was a regular broadcaster for the BBC. Here his talks ranged from a discussion of Breughel's art to the buildings of Gaudi; from a series on Englishmen's castles to meditations on modern town planning; from Elizabethan mannerism to contemporary American architecture - and of course to his ground-breaking series of Reith Lectures on "The Englishness of English Art".

Summary:
For centuries exchanges between the domestic and the foreign have altered and transformed architecture. Today these exchanges have become highly intensified. The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture attempts to expand the issues in architecture beyond its traditional practice by focusing on the opportunities and limitations in architecture as a cultural and political enterprise. The central theme is how these exchanges manifest themselves in contemporary architecture in terms of its aesthetic potential and its practice, which, in turn, are impacted by broad economic, cultural and political issues. This book traces how diverse cultural encounters inevitably modify conventional categories, standards and codes of architecture, such as domestic identity, its political and economic representations and the negotiations with what is considered foreign. It presents the aspects of architecture that have become crucial, through theoretical reflections by distinguished scholars and interviews with some of the most influential architects.

Summary:
The Argentine architect Ignacio Dahl Rocha and the Swiss architect Jacques Richter have been regarded as prominent champions of an elegant brand of modernity at least since their design of the Espacité Tower on Place Le Corbusier in La Chaux-de-Fonds and their renovation of Jean Tschumis Nestlé corporate headquarters on the shores of Lake Geneva. Their work in the United States and Canada, which began when they were students together at Yale University, is increasingly expanding to include South America as well. In the last fifteen years, they have completed numerous projects, including cultural, educational, administrative, hospital, and residential buildings, primarily in Switzerland but also in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina. The most important are presented here, in this only current monograph on the firm.
