Summary:
Otto Wagner is considered as the "father of the Viennese modernism" and one of the most important international architects. The publication on the MAK exhibition illustrates the resonance of Wagner's oeuvre by protagonists of early modernism as well as his influence on his contemporaries, students and subsequent generations of architects and designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Joze Plecnik, Leopold Bauer, Rudolph M. Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Auguste Perret, Frei Otto, Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi/Denise Scott Brown. With generous and often unknown image material the book illustrates Wagner's influence on international architecture from the turn of the century to the present, and thus a link between the intricate relationship of modernism and postmodernism.

Summary:
Cities around the world are in the midst of a profound transformation as the wealthy price out the remnants of the urban working class, especially people of color. Displacement is neither accidental or inevitable. It happens because a whole range of people and institutions profit handsomely. ''Defying displacement'', focused on the US but informed by global examples, investigates gentrification from the perspective of the people fighting it, members of communities whose survival is threatened by some of the most powerful institutions on the planet. Andrew Lee names the names and identifies the actual state and corporate forces that work together to enrich a very specific group of people: property developers and real estate investors who make a killing, politicians who watch their tax bases grow, banks that write profitable loans for new businesses and mortgages for new homeowners. Meanwhile, business districts are planned, tax abatements unveiled, redevelopment schemes dreamed up, corporate and university campuses expanded, and ordinary people are driven from their homes.

Summary:
"Built futures" brings together Shahed Saleem’s written and visual research on the British Mosque, to narrate how mosques have emerged, evolved and become established in Britain since the late nineteenth century. Critical texts describe the ways in which mosques have been created through the grassroots, self-funded and self-built endeavours of migrant Muslim communities of diverse backgrounds, as they have settled in Britain. Through this journey of research, writing and designing, Saleem challenges the norms and assumptions of his own architectural training and wider design culture, leading him to ask: where is architectural meaning made, and with whom does authorship actually reside? Mostly created through the adaptation of existing buildings, from pubs to cinemas, high street banks to domestic terraces, the mosques which emerge from these sites are a combination of cultural histories and architectural styles, resulting in unexpected and original buildings that are powerful expressions of minority community agency and empowerment.

Summary:
From its title to its formal arrangement of language, Brad Feuerhelm's Dein Kampf suggests a commentary on our cyclical anxieties about ideology. Anxiety is implicit in his photographs and Berlin is their natural backdrop, being a city in which several ideologies collided in the twentieth century. The city exemplifies the quagmire of possibilities in which the tensions of historical narrative and contemporary political and ideological doubt are played out in visual motifs throughout the landscape. Fragments of the past and symbols of capitalist modernity underpin the work-banks, insurance companies and people as effigies of citizens appear as a cloaking miasma, the spectre of past, present and no future. The schema of the glitch and the appropriation methods in Feuerhelm's work are subtle enquiries into the contemporary conditions of fear and confusion. Loose associations about changing futures under technology, religion, immigration and the future of the photographic image also loom large. Dein Kampf is Feuerhelm's proposition about how we activate image and ideology in the book form. Includes text by Ulrich Baer.

Summary:
There are many apparently contradictory black-and-white images of Rome that Ludovico Quaroni took around the eternal city. The baroque is to be found side by side with shacks, while the explosion of consumer society – during Italy's economic boom – does little to erase the traces of a city that seems to have come straight out of a Vittorio De Sica or Roberto Rossellini film. And then there are the fountains of Rome and the banks of the Tiber, Franco Albini's Rinascente and Castel Sant'Angelo, the EUR and the Vatican, right up to the market in Piazza Vittorio and the ancient Appian Way. Layers of civilisations intertwining, and in between them, the people of Rome, seemingly indifferent to the passing of the centuries. The architect's eye brings to life an unpublished and surprising book that may also be considered – and this is the common thread—an act of love towards the city where he was born. A text by the writer Francesco Pecoraro, himself a student of Quaroni, pays homage to the great architect's Rome.

Summary:
In the summer of 1975, facing surgery with the potential of paralysis, a young Joel Sternfeld went off in search of a last idyll-- and found it in Nags Head, on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. From June to August he captured the beach town floating in time, a sense of spatial and temporal fluidity. Sternfeld’s images show beachgoers of all ages enjoying scenes of leisure and partying in what became his first body of work addressing a season. Yet this summer sojourn was tragically broken by the news of the death of his brother; Sternfeld returned to New York, never to go back to Nags Head. Eventually he began working again and one day ventured to Rockaway Beach, Queens. Here he took a picture in which "all at once the ugly scene appeared beautiful to me": the hues of sand, apartments and sky fuse into a cohesive whole. This photo, with its conceptual roots in Nags Head, would lead to the color structures of Sternfeld’s magnum opus American Prospects, his ambitious realization of what he had always wanted to do: follow the seasons across America.
