Summary:
WOJR: Organization for Architecture is an innovative group of designers based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who are committed to the idea of architecture as a form of cultural production, engaging the intersections of art, architecture, and urbanism. With this idea at its foundation, Room for Artifacts contains a collection of sixteen architectural artifacts designed by WOJR—a mask, a church, a labyrinth, a dwelling, a bust, and a series of totems, among others. The artifacts are presented three times throughout the book—in conceptual drawings, architectural drawings, and images. Certain characteristics recur, such as symmetry, frontality, figurality, proportionality, and play between flatness and depth, underscoring WOJR’s preoccupation with the fundamental aspects of architectural form that are rich in historical precedent. Room for Artifacts offers a new way to explore the role of architectural representation in a contemporary context, looking at how architects can invoke aspects of ideologies from architects of the past while establishing a progressive agenda for a forward-looking body of work.

Summary:
In '''Architecture unbound,'' noted architecture critic Joseph Giovannini proposes that our current architectural landscape ultimately emerged from transgressive and progressive art movements that had roiled Europe before and after World War I. By the 1960s, social unrest and cultural disruption opened the way for investigations into an inventive, antiauthoritarian architecture. Explorations emerged in the 1970s, and built projects surfaced in the 1980s, taking digital form in the 1990s, with large-scale projects finally landing on the far side of the millennium. '''Architecture unbound'' traces all of these developments and influences, presenting an authoritative and illuminating history not only of the sources of contemporary currents in architecture but also of the twentieth-century avant-garde and the twenty-first-century digital revolution in form-making, and profiling the most influential practitioners and their most notable projects, including Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall, Zaha Hadid’s Guangzhou Opera House, Daniel Libeskind’s master plan for the World Trade Center, Rem Koolhaas’s CCTV Tower, and Herzog and de Meuron’s Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing.

Bertrand Goldberg (1913-1997) was a visionary Chicago architect whose designs for housing, urban planning, and industrial design made a distinctive mark in the modern era. This handsome publication, the first to focus in-depth on the entirety of Goldberg's life and work, traces his development from his early Bauhaus training to his notable architectural achievements. Featuring previously unpublished material, it also includes Goldberg's plans for unrealized projects as well as his collaborations with other prominent modern architects, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Buckminster Fuller. Goldberg's interest in the social dimension of architecture was reflected in many of his cutting-edge designs. In 1959, he conceived the plan for his most iconic structure, the sixty-story Marina City residential towers, in the heart of downtown Chicago. He created a number of hospitals that offered a new paradigm for how patients and staff interacted within the space. Goldberg's progressive designs also extended to schools, prefabricated structures, and furniture.

Summary:
When it comes to architecture, Switzerland wields an international influence that belies its small geographic size. Such prominent figures as Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor lead a chorus of innovative new voices emanating from this mountainous nation where craftsmanship, simple beauty, and environmental sensitivity have always been prized values. "Swiss Made" presents the work of the celebrated studios and architects at the forefront of Swiss design, much of which has never been seen before in the United States. In his introduction, historian Steven Spier provides an overview of Swiss architecture and considers the cultural attitudes that have fostered such refined buildings. Critic Martin Tschantz assesses the Swiss tradition of integrating progressive design, indigenous building techniques, and advanced engineering systems. The photographs by Christian Richters are supplemented by drawings and plans of the many projects included in this volume. "Swiss Made" features the work of: Burkhalter & Sumi, Diener & Diener, Gigon & Guyer, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Märkli, Peter Zumthor, and many others.
