Summary:
Thanks to digital technology and post-structuralist thought, architects and artists are facing a brave new world of bodies without organs, buildings that circumscribe their function, and art that forms a prosthetic hard drive for our consciousness. In this schema, technology, which Marshal McLuhan theorized as the extension of our bodies into the world, has become inverted and is now literally seen as modifying and transforming our relation to that world through media's ability to not only create the means of representation, its subject and content, but also organize author and audience alike. Beyond Form is both a celebration of our situation and a critical survival manual. The contributors to this volume, including artists Jennifer Steinkamp and Maureen Connor, respond to the mediating space of technology, aware that the forms of the future lie within the indeterminate content of cultural production and consumption itself, and not within the ideal of the technological sublime of modernism that had in the past reduced this issue, both performatively and iconographically, to a question of form, function and style. Essays by Neil Leach, Jeffrey Kipnis, Omer Fast, Andrew Benjamin, Donald Kunze, et al.

Summary:
With three billion more humans projected to be living in cities by 2050, all design is increasingly urban design. And with as much data now produced every day as was produced in all of human history to the year 2007, all architecture is increasingly information architecture. Praised in the NewYork Times for its "intelligent enquiry and actionable theorizing," Local Code is a collection of data-driven tools and design prototypes for understanding and transforming the physical, social, and ecological resilience of cities.'the book's data-driven layout arranges drawings of 3,659 digitally-tailored interventions for vacant public land in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Venice, Italy. Between these illustrated case studies, critical essays present surprising and essential links between such designs and the seminal work of urbanist Jane Jacobs, artist Gordon Matta-Clark, and digital mapping pioneer Howard Fisher, along with the developing science of urban nature and complexity. In text and image, Local Code presents'a digitally prolific, open-ended approach to urban resilience and social and environmental justice; At once analytic and visionary, it pioneers a new field of enquiry and action at the meeting of big data and the expanding city.

Summary:
The occupation of space is a trend that can currently be recognized in many creative fields. While furniture and product design were once largely driven by classical industrial and interior design, these disciplines are now also being shaped by the visual culture of graphic design and high-tech production processes. These new influences are contributing to the creation of furniture and interiors that go beyond anything previously designed or imagined. Furnish presents domestic territories that expand upon our current understanding of interior design. The book documents recent work by designers, artists and architects that shows how they are using furniture in pioneering ways: as environment, as art object, as digital-organic growth, as mutation or as insertion. These cutting-edge examples are a sure indicator of the trends that will be influencing interiors as well as hotel, restaurant and club design for the next several years. Furnish also explores the new hybrid nature of occupied spaces, where the domestic enters the realm of fine art and where objects from pimped heirlooms to rapid prototypes find their homes. The book also presents surprising interdisciplinary work, for example, the results of architects engineering tables, graphic designers creating soft furniture and industrial designers making concept art. The experimental spaces that are shown in Furnish are not only interesting for interior designers, but also contain innovative examples of interdisciplinary design work that are relevant and inspiring for anyone working creatively.

Over the past 1,000 years, countless images have been created to depict sound in forms that theoretically could be “played” just as though they were modern sound recordings. Now, for the first time in history, this compilation uses innovative digital techniques to convert historic “pictures of sound” dating back as far as the Middle Ages directly into meaningful audio.

Summary:
Naturalizing Architecture is the new edition of Archilab 2013. Today, through recourse to the most advanced digital tools, architects envisage projects which evolve according to principals similar to those found in nature. The architecture is therefore designed like an organism in constant adaptation, with the ability to evolve in close interaction with the material conditions of its environment. Broadly exceeding the boundaries of their practice, architects now develop a practice at the crossroads of design, computer science, engineering and biology. Conditions for production in the domain of architecture are radically redefined by this convergence, as well as by the constant evolution of the processes and tools for digital manufacturing.

Summary:
A new generation of architects is pushing digital technology to its limits and continues a tradition of "organic" architecture, often labeled "blobitecture." A few architects in the pre-digital era anticipated the shape of today's sleek and supple buildings, but computers have helped make many of today's large, truly innovative architectural projects buildable. Up until now, the new generation's architectural work has been overshadowed by that of the previous generation. This volume defines the next generation and captures the latest trends in architecture it has put forward. Among the thirty architects featured are Greg Lynn, ShoP, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, Wes Jones, Lindy Roy, Foreign Office Architects, Rem Koolhaas, and Frank Gehry.
