Summary:

Summary:
Known for his long-exposure photographic series of empty movie theaters and drive-ins, seascapes, museum dioramas, and waxworks, Hiroshi Sugimoto has been turning his camera on international icons of 20th-century architecture since 1997. His deliberately blurred and seemingly timeless photographs depict structures as diverse as the Empire State Building, Le Corbusier's Chapel de Nôtre Dame du Haut, and Tadao Ando's Church of Light in Osaka. The resulting black-and-white photographs, shot distinctly out of focus and from unusual angles, are not attempts at documentation but rather evocation--meant to isolate the buildings from their contexts, allowing them to exist as dreamlike, uninhabited ideals. Among the other buildings represented in the series are Philippe Starck's Asahi Breweries, Fumihiko Maki's Fujisawa Municipal Gymnasium, the United Nations Building, the Chrysler Building, Giuseppi Terragni's Santelia Monument Como, the World Trade Center, Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, Antonio Gaudí's Casa Batlló II, the 1922 Schindler House, and buildings by Frank Gehry, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many others in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Summary:

Exposed Architecture offers an overview of work by young architects in Latin America. Published in collaboration with LIGA, Space for Architecture in Mexico City, it is broken into three parts. The first documents, through images and brief texts, exhibitions that twelve firms from Argentina, Brazil/Uruguay, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and from Portugal created at LIGA’s exhibition space in Mexico. In the second part, six “Studio Interludes” shed light on practice and aesthetics in contemporary Latin American architecture. The third part comprises short essays by Latin American architects, along with two interviews with local figures, looking at key aspects and topics against a backdrop of the many challenges the region poses for the production and communication of architecture.

Summary:
What does it mean to practice architecture today? Does Italian architecture exist? What characterizes it? What values and objectives do you refer to when designing your architecture, and why? These are the questions recently put to 20 cutting-edge architectural firms working in Italy today. The answers come together in "Italy Now? Country Positions in Architecture", which presents the architects’written responses in parallel with their design work. Edited by Alberto Alessi, this bilingual book also contains critical essays by Pier Vittorio Aureli and Gabriele Mastrigli. Noted Italian photographers Gabriele Basilico, Francesco Jodice, Armin Linke, and Alberto Muciaccia have contributed their visions of Italy - the land and people as well as the architecture - to deepen the context of this book. Based on an exhibit held at Cornell University as well as on two related conferences, one in Ithaca and the other in New York City, "Italy Now?" offers an intriguing look at contemporary Italian architecture - its physical expression and the thinking behind it.
