Summary:
The Castro Theatre, the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Headquarters, 450 Sutter Medico-Dental Building – these masterpieces of San Francisco’s Art Deco heritage are the work of one man: Timothy Pflueger. While his contemporaries looked to beaux arts traditions to rebuild the city, he brought exotic Mayan, Asian, and Egyptian forms to buildings ranging from simple cocktail lounges to the city’s first skyscrapers. Pflueger was one of the city’s most prolific architects during his 40-year career. Therese Poletti tells the fascinating story of Pflueger’s life and work in "Art Deco San Francisco". In lively detail, she relates how Pflueger built extravagant compositions in metal, concrete, and glass.

Summary:
Political conflicts, humanitarian disasters, wars and migrations – we live in an age of global unrest and discontinuity. While official reactions consist in the search for means of stabilization and restraint, the dynamics of deregulation are giving rise to a situation characterized by global parallel systems: parallel architectures, parallel societies, parallel lives. This book offers an insight into the complex spatial and social realities of globalization, from city-like informal markets in Moscow and the post-war self-urbanization in Kosovo to the border economies of the Mediterranean and the parallel worlds of today’s burgeoning megacities. In this state of uncertainties, networks have become the most powerful tool in how we organize our lives. The emerging struggle between network formations produces a space that is both fragmented and contested, yet testifies to the creativity of its inhabitants. As a result, our cities have become topologies of overlapping realities and narratives as much as they are geographical entities. Networked Cultures traces these conflictual negotiations in dialogue with artists, architects, curators and theorists whose work explores possibilities for a multi-inhabitation of territories and narratives across cultural, social or geographic boundaries. Their shared knowledge and accompanying case studies provide stirring insights as well as imaginative encounters with a world of networks – our world. The enclosed DVD features conversations with the contributors to this book that follow the thematic strands along which the collaborative format of Networked Cultures has evolved: Network Creativity – Contested Spaces – Trading Places – Parallel Worlds.

Summary:
After centuries of dealing with cold as the dominant climatic factor for architectural design in Central Europe, architects must now search for experimental approaches to life in a rapidly warming climate. Architecture and urban design strive for efficient technical solutions to meet changing climatic conditions and the energy standards they demand without really questioning customary notions of comfort, forms of living, and urban coexistence. Despite supposed powerlessness in the face of the impending climate catastrophe, the contributions collected in ''Wiener Hitze'' offer a diverse range of narratives that share experiences, observations, and the needs of people that inhabit hotter worlds, both real and imagined. What role as climate producers can architecture and the city play in shaping our habitat if these important issues are understood not only in purely technological but also in cultural and social terms?

Summary:
The work of Modernist architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) is exemplary of an in-between practice, which is neither architecture nor conservation, but rather, architecture in conversion, dependent upon time, weather, and tempo. This book discusses the notion of architecture in conversion, revealing it to be radically different from current conservation practices, and to entail more than a change of use. Scarpa’s work represents ‘a radical turn in how we see or understand something’. The significance of time, weather and tempo within Scarpa’s work, as well as the influences of artists such as Man Ray and Emilio Vedova and composer Luigi Nono, are revealed through a close analysis of Scarpa’s drawings and details from key buildings and their histories of multiple authorship. The book examines drawing as central to Scarpa’s practice: in lieu of creating physical models, his muti-directional drawings foreshadow the orbital movements of digital modeling techniques.

Summary:
''Eight Meditations on Architecture'' offers a rare and illuminating dialogue between two of Europe's most reflective architectural voices—Juhani Pallasmaa and Alberto Campo Baeza. Through a series of eight essays, the book examines eternal architectural themes—Beauty, Light, Time, Memory, Universality, Wisdom, Sacred, and Essentiality—revealing how enduring values shape the practice of building and the meaning of space. More than an academic treatise, this unique work underscores the necessity of cultural reflection and philosophical grounding in architectural practice. Written by architects whose writings are already essential reading in architectural education, these meditations offer a rigorous yet poetic inquiry into the discipline. Richly illustrated with contributions that interweave theory and personal insight, ''Eight Meditations on Architecture'' provides a space for reflection that is increasingly rare in contemporary discourse—one where theory and practice are not opposites but mutually reinforcing paths toward meaningful design.

Summary:
Following the example of music publication, Source Books in Architecture offers an alternative to the traditional architectural monograph. If one is interested in hearing music, he or she simply buys the desired recording. If, however, one wishes to study a particular piece in greater depth, it is possible to purchase the score- the written code that more clearly elucidates the structure, organization, and creative process that brings the work into being. This series is offered in the same spirit. Each Source Book focuses on the work of a particular architect or on a special topic in contemporary architecture and is meant to expose the foundations and details of the work in question. The work is documented through early studies, models, renderings, working drawings, writings, and photographs at a level of detail that allows complete and careful study of a project from conception to completion. The graphic component is accompanied by commentary from the architect and critics that further explore the technical and cultural content of the work.
