Project
AP144.S2.D72
Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for a multiple use building in Birmingham, England, for Shantasea Limited. Cedric Price resigned as the architect for the project and took on the role of architect for Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), one of the proposed tenants for the Shantasea project. The multi-functional centre was to include a theatre, TV studios, an audio-visual exhibition area, retail stores, offices, a meeting hall, a gallery, a seminar area, a library, and parking within an approx. 3,500,000 square-foot area. Drawings include sections showing preliminary circulation patterns, and design development drawings for seven alternate schemes, each with different total square footage. Volumetric studies compare functions and areas for each design. Diagrammatic plans and sections explore vertical and horizontal circulation patterns, alternate layouts for parking, and the relationship between areas of the building for BMI and those shared by BMI and other tenants. Material in this file was produced between 1967 and 1970. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, and textual records.

Sheffield Festival
AP144.S2.D61
Description:
File documents an unrealized project for the Sheffield Festival which was organized by the University of Sheffield Union of Students, in Sheffield, England, United Kingdom. An early proposal by Feliks Topolski and Cedric Price called for lightweight and movable gem-shaped enclosures of metal tubing, and fibreglass panels to be illustrated by Topolski. Later proposals involved the participation of Richard Hamilton, Robyn Denny, Bernard Cohen, and Joe Tilson. Material in this file includes conceptual sketches, detail sketches of support system, reprographic copies from original drawings, and photographic views of a model. Some material in this file was published in Price, Cedric, with Peter Murray. 'The Second Instalment in the Cedric Price Supplement Series', 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (January 1971), 38. Feliks Topolski and Cedric Price also collaborated on a later project (see Topolski/Waterloo AP144.S2.D88). Material in the file was produced between 1964 and 1968. File contains conceptual drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.

A.D. Thacker fonds
AP004
Synopsis:
The A.D. Thacker fonds is comprised of project proposals and documentation dating from around 1913-1938, depicting structures designed by Thacker. Much of Thacker's work was completed in Quebec, but he also completed projects in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Thacker designed many churches for religious institutions that were directly involved in the oppressive, colonial assimilation policies and systems of the Canadian government towards indigenous people. The fonds contains 33 drawings, 16 reprographic copies, 12 photographs and 8 textual documents.

Housing Research
AP144.S2.D67
Description:
File documents Housing Research on flexible, pre-fabricated, short-life housing in the United Kingdom. Much of the material developed for this project was published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 4", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (October 1971), 619-628; 630, and "Cedric Price Supplement No. 5", 'Architectural Design', vol. 42, (January 1972), 24-29; 38-43. Although the research was sponsored by Cedric Price it is possible that he presented the results to the Ministry of Housing. The published research examines housing's "life patterning" potential within broader social, economic, and historical contexts. Some of the material also relates to Steel House (AP144.S2.D60). Cedric Price developed proposals for two test sites: Rochdale in Greater Manchester and Tilbury in Thurrock, England. Material in this file was produced between 1951 and 1998, but predominantly between 1967 and 1971. File contains material and research by Royston Landau. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, layout, maps, model, photographic materials, presentation panels, and textual records.

Southend Roof
AP144.S2.D85
Description:
File documents an unexecuted design for a suspended inflatable roof over the pedestrian area of High Street in Southend-on-Sea, England, for client David Keddie. Cedric Price and Frank Newby designed a roof system that could respond to adverse weather conditions. The final proposal consists of three inflatable reinforced tubes suspended at intervals from metal posts. The tubes can be staggered irregularly to accommodate variations in the cornice heights and canopies of adjacent buildings. Conceptual sketches show preliminary sections for alternate designs for the roof, and presentation drawings show alternate designs for the roof layout. Other drawings include site plan, street layout plans, and details, including one showing a tensioned pneumatic membrane and connection details to post. Many conceptual sketches and drawings are also included within the textual records. Some material in this file was published in "Southend Roof", 'Architectural Design', October 1972, 596-597, and 'Techniques et Architecture', May-June 1975. Material in this file was produced between 1971 and 1975. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, model, photographic materials, presentation drawings, and textual records.

Greenbird
AP144.S2.D96
Description:
File documents Greenbird, an aviary for West Green House at Hartley Wintney, in Hampshire, England. Although construction did begin it is unclear whether the project was ever completed. The design for the aviary called for metal poles and a roof grid covered with a wire framework and nylon mesh. Conceptual sketches show various roof designs and a system for providing variable heights. The final design also included an artificial spring, stepped waterfall, rock pool, shallow pool, beach and marsh areas, and perches at various heights. Existing conditions material includes a colour aerial photograph mounted on press board and an existing survey plan. Design development drawings also include axonometric drawings of the structure and proposals for pools and waterfalls. Some material in this file was published in 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 90, 99. Material in this file was produced between1961 and 1979, but predominantly between 1975 and 1979. Several drawings in the file are attributed to McAlpine Design Group and Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, consultant drawing, photographic material, and textual records.

It was designed by Lord Snowdon, Cedric Price and engineer Frank Newby. The aviary was constructed using aluminium cast tubes, cables, and welded aluminium mesh, and incorporated an elevated walkway. Material in this file includes early site surveys, development and landscaping plans for the zoo and adjacent areas; conceptual sketches; design development sketches; working drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, axonometric drawings, and details showing footings, elevated walkway, planting and nesting boxes, pool cliffs and waterfalls, retaining wall, public entrance, perch prototype, diagrams showing bird activities/locations, structural details, work schedules; and working drawings by associate architects, engineering consultants, and manufacturers. Publication materials include originals and copies for an article in 'Architectural Design' (Sept. 1965), 451-459. Material is this file was produced between 1958 and 2001, but predominantly between 1960 and 1966. Merrifield, Tone Vale
AP144.S2.D55
Description:
File documents an unexecuted proposal for additions to the Merrifield Unit of the Tone Vale Hospital in Taunton, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. The additions to this children's mental hospital unit were to be implemented in phases due to budget constraints and also because it allowed for a "re-think" of the design and construction between phases. The hospital expansion is based on a modular construction system using an open timber cube, and is similar to that used for the Fun Palace Pilot Project (AP144.S2.D46). A set of stapled drawings includes plans and diagrammatic axonometric drawings which show numerous addition phases and emphasizes the functional relationships between the various phases. A complete sequence of numbered drawings includes plans and axonometric drawings for the existing structure, landscaping, and the modular unit structures for different phases of the additions. Reprographic copies were created from original drawings and notes on some of the copies indicate possible variations in the use of major activity areas in phase 1. A number of drawings are marked with cropping dimensions, possibly for publication purposes. Material in this file was produced in1964. File contains presentation drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.
