Humanities in the time of AI

Summary:
If humanistic research consists of the generation of consensus positions, simple expression, summarized texts, or passable translations, then we have arrived at the place where AI is able to accomplish these different missions to a convincing degree. However, Laurent Dubreuil argues, such tasks do not, in any way, constitute the humanities. On the contrary, he posits, a(...)

On the contrary, he posits, a maximalist take on scholarship would not focus on generation but on creation, as a subject and as an object. Dubreuil seizes the opportunity of what AI reveals about the meaning of humanistic inquiry to offer a path for the renewal of the humanities on transhistorical, transcultural, and transdisciplinary grounds.

Summary:
Entropy is the quantitative measure of disorder in a system. During the nineteenth century, chaos, seen through an entropic lens, was linked to irresponsible waste and moral debauchery, but in the second part of the twentieth century the notion has beenreconsidered in an affirmative sense, as a condition linked to growing complexity and new life. This alternate understanding of entropy has come to inform contemporary discourse and the practice of a new architectural generation. Many of the papers in this issue were first presented at the Phyllis Lambert seminar that took place at the École d'architecture, Université de Montréal, in March 2010

Summary:
This volume is a compelling and surprising map of our complex relationship to intelligence, from ancient to emerging systems of knowledge. A wildly associative constellation of ideas, stories, artworks and historical materials, the Atlas draws on art historian Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas — an image map of the “afterlife of antiquity” — to approach the defining concepts of AI from an imaginative, artistic and revitalising perspective. The Atlas presents a hyperdimensional view of the world, through a broad range of perspectives that explore the question of what AI has been and what it is becoming. Key texts on modelling, prediction and automation are brought together with stories of science fiction, dreams and human knowledge, set among visionary and surreal images.
