- This album contains mostly design development and presentation drawings for the conversion or renovation of several Parisan hôtel particuliers by Hubert Rohault de Fleury, and for the Rohault de Fleury family house, 12-14 rue d'Aguesseau, Paris. Also included are four prints of British country seats. The drawings - mostly plans - for hôtel particuliers include: alterations to the Hôtel du ministère de la Guerre, perhaps the initial conversion of the Hôtel du Maine into government offices (DR1974:0002:011:003 - DR1974:0002:011:005); alterations to Hôtel de Rothelin-Charolais (Hôtel de Conti) as offices for the Ministère de l'intérieur (DR1974:0002:011:006 - DR1974:0002:011:009); the conversion of Hôtel de Soyécourt into gendarmerie barracks (DR1974:0002:011:017 - DR1974:0002:011:027 and DR1974:0002:011:089); and the alterations to Hôtel de la Colonnade (Grand and Petit Hôtels de Wagram) as offices for the Ministère des affaires étrangères (DR1974:0002:011:028 - DR1974:0002:011:042). Letter DR1974:0002:011:037 R/V apparently concerns the alterations to Hôtel de la Colonnade. The album contains drawings for several other hôtels - Hôtel de Lorge, Petit hôtel de Nivernais, Hôtel de Bouillon, and an hôtel on rue des Quatre-Fils. The purpose of these drawings has not been determined. Drawings for the Rohault de Fleury family house include: 22 graphite design development drawings with dimensions, calculations and notes - mostly plans and elevations; seven finished watercolour presentation drawings - plans, sections and elevations; two interior perspectives; and one drawing for the roof structures (DR1974:0002:011:050 - DR1974:0002:011:083). The coloured sections and the interior perspective drawings show the Empire style interior decoration, including furnishings (DR1974:0002:011:080 - DR1974:0002:011:082 R and DR1974:0002:011:083 R). The four prints are part of a series of views of English country seats by William Henry Toms after Thomas Badeslade and William Winstanley printed during the mid 18th century: Hawarden Castle and the adjacent Broadlane Hall, Wales, seat of Sir John Glynne; Erddig (house), Wales, seat of Simon Yorke; Hather Thorpe (house), Lincolnshire, England, seat of Sir Michael Newton; and Rushton Hall, Northamptonshire, England, seat of Viscount Cullen (DR1974:0002:011:085 - DR1974:0002:011:088). File documents the executed project for an office building to house the computer facilities of the British Transport Docks Board (BTDB) at Bulls Bridge and Hayes Road, in Southall, Ealing, England. The building has few doors and no corridors, rooms for computers, data control and preparation, and offices for engineers, programmers, and analysts. The client anticipated a 20% expansion of facilities during the life-cycle of the building and Cedric Price developed designs for "expanding" the building without interrupting computer services which were to run 24 hours a day. Design included interior walls that can be dismounted and reinstalled, a raised flexible floor system, and an exterior cladding system that allowed for an interchange between opaque and transparent panels. Existing conditions material includes an ordinance survey (1963) and floor plans for an unidentified building. Design development and working drawings include site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations, and construction details. The plans show: circulation patterns and relationships between areas; a series of alternate floor plans for computer room expansion; connections between original and expanded services; the computer room and equipment; furniture layout; framing and structure; and plans for acoustic and visual barriers. Also included are axonometric drawings of the phased development/expansion of the structure; design validation charts which measure projected "required" design elements against observation and investigation; environmental control charts exploring alternate proposals for illumination, ventilation, air, temperature, and acoustic control of certain areas, and diagrammatic sections showing environmental controls for air intake, returns and circulation; project requirements charts; project task sequencing diagrams; perspective drawings; elevations and sections for an illuminated sign; and details and wall sections for the exterior cladding. Twenty-nine individual and 60 sets of reprographic copies are stamped "issued contractor". File documents the various unexecuted proposals for the Fun Palace Project, an interactive and adaptable, educational and cultural complex to be located in London, England. The project was commissioned by Joan Littlewood, to be erected on disused public land slated for redevelopment and intended to be dismantled after 10 years. Conceptual and design development drawings were created for a typical Fun Palace that could be erected on any suitable site, and several sites were considered, some belonging to the Civic Trust. Presentation drawings were elaborated for a Fun Palace in the Lea Valley at Mill Meads and for a later modified Pilot Project in Camden Town. Publication drawings were also created for an article in Price, Cedric. "Fun Palace Project." 'Architectural Review'. (January 1965), 74-75. The Fun Palace Trust was created to oversee the project and the file contains material from related activities of the Trust which was active until the 1970's. Existing conditions drawings begin in 1961 and include regional, zoning, and transportation maps of Greater London and a photocollage of the site. File documents the unexecuted design for the headquarters of the Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), in Birmingham, England. This project is related to the Shantasea Development (AP144.S2.D72) from which Cedric Price resigned as architect to take on the role of architect for BMI, one of the proposed tenants for the Shantasea project. Cedric Price proposed a municipal and regional "nerve centre" to house seminar and study rooms, workshops, galleries, film, television and music studios, a library, a planetarium, and a theatre. A flexible life-cycle plan (expansion, static, contraction) for the building and the activities would allow BMI to expand in the short and medium term, and to shrink in the long term, when it was assumed that many of its roles would be replaced by the UK's Open University plan (Works II, 42). Work on the project came to a stop in 1970 under a new city council (Architectural Design, June 1971, 368). Existing conditions material consists of maps and a survey of Birmingham. Conceptual sketches and drawings include: annotated diagrammatic plans and sections used to develop the building's massing and the horizontal/vertical relationships between functional areas; axonometric views showing the building's general form/functions; plans used for calculating square footage; diagrams showing visual and physical movement through the building; information and movement charts; and flow charts showing the building's organization. Design development drawings consist of graphs showing how functional areas might be used over time. Design development and working drawings include: diagrammatic plans and sections; exploded axonometric views of the functional relationships between areas; exterior axonometric views; sectional perspectives; space allocation plans; circulation drawings; diagrams showing activities throughout the day; furniture equipment schedules; theatre seating and stair studies; and elevations for exterior cladding. The Arthur Erickson fonds documents the work and activities of Canadian architect Arthur Erickson between 1947 and 2002 (predominant dates 1963-ca. 2000). File documents an unexecuted project for Two Tree Island, the last uninhabited island in the Thames Estuary, in Essex, England. Cedric Price collaborated with Yorke Rosenberg Mardall Architects (YMR) on the project for client David Keddie, to develop a 178-hectare site on the island which encompassed both existing and reclaimed land, some of which was reserved under a trust for nature conservation. Early proposals showed residential areas, commercial, as well as, industrial zones, and facilities for recreation and leisure activities, including a marina. The final design proposed a much smaller residential area and harbour and included larger conservation and marshland areas in response to local concerns. The project was rejected and a portion of Two Tree Island was leased to the Nature Conservancy (NERC). An Appeal and Public Enquiry lodged by the client was subsequently indefinitely postponed. The architects produced several versions of a consultant's report, created a 'logbook' for the project, and published a brochure and promotional material for a public meeting. Existing conditions and reference material in the file includes maps of the area showing locations for a photo survey; Port of Authority of London plans showing water depths at various locations; a drawing of Marine Island, Essex; and a collage of photos of the area mounted on a board. Sketches by Cedric Price show development plans for the island and explore alternate "open" and "closed" configurations for the basin. Sketch sections show established maximum flood heights on the proposed schemes (see sketches in Works II, p. 86). A series of schematic drawings by YMR develop preliminary schemes exploring alternate layouts in relation to the primary basin configuration. A perspective drawing shows a view of the site from the main road to the island. Design development drawings include both original drawings and reprographic copies and include bird's-eye view perspective sketches; diagrams showing "domestic development" and projected "typical patterning"; and diagrammatic plans/charts showing existing and reclaimed areas, compatibility of activities, and degrees of accessibility (see typical diagram in Works II, p. 87). Other design development drawings include standard plans, sections and elevations, as well as site plans, land-use plans for the marina, plans showing alternate layouts for the marina dock, plans showing Thames tidal defences, site sections, and breakwater profiles. Working drawings for the marina by consulting engineers Sir Frederick Snow and Partners include survey plans, detailed sections illustrating the reinforcement and stabilization of the marine bed, and task sequencing diagrams and charts. Publication and presentation material includes photographs of rendered perspectives, over 18 watercolour renderings of Two Tree Island by Cedric Price, and a mock-up for a 13-page brochure or report summarizing the project. Many drawings are also included in the textual records, which also include Cedric Price's diary on the project.
