Summary:
This new survey provides a complete history of American art and architecture from its seventeenth-century colonial beginnings to the latest installation and video work. Structured chronologically, the book defines the characteristics of the different periods and highlights the consistent forms, techniques, and styles that mark the art and architecture as distinctively American. Michael J. Lewis charts the ways in which American artists and architects both adopted and diverged from earlier European models to create an original visual language of their own. He also shows how that language in turn came to influence and eventually dominate art and architecture around the world. The author integrates discussions of both buildings and works of visual art, revealing the shared social and aesthetic concerns that underlie the two. Vernacular, religious, secular, and corporate architecture appears alongside paintings, sculpture, photography, and new-media art. Major American artists and works from the seventeenth century to today are included, such as epic history paintings by Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley; sublime landscapes by Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederick Church; society portraits by John Singer Sargent; groundbreaking abstract expressionist and pop art by Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Andy Warhol; and challenging sculptural, installation, and video works from more recent years by Robert Gober, Fred Wilson, and Matthew Barney. In architecture, dozens of different building types are illustrated and discussed, from the earliest colonial houses and churches to the most spectacular modernist and postmodernist houses, stations, museums, and iconic skyscrapers. 275 illustrations, 175 in color.

Summary:
Architecture affects people. The architecture of hospitals contributes to the well-being and recovery of patients. This bold proposition dates back to the late 18th century, and has been a recurring theme in the functional development of hospital architecture ever since. The most recent manifestation of this was the phenomenon of 'Evidence-Based Design', which originated in the USA. This methodology compares the effects of various spatial factors and provided indisputable evidence that architecture does indeed work for the first time. The positive influence of architecture is one of the two cornerstones of "The architecture of hospitals". The other is architecture as an historical discipline with a wide-ranging cultural dimension. The hospital, being a public and representative building with a special societal function, is the ideal vehicle to express this cultural dimension. From French and German examples it seems that good architecture can, moreover, contribute to an agreeable, orderly and well maintained environment, which perhaps has a greater impact on the functioning of the hospital than the effects of Evidence-Based Design. Architecture as architecture and as medicine is the theme of "The architecture of hospitals". Partially based on a project of the same name initiated by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), which included various conferences, studios and workshops, the book bears no resemblance to the standard bundle of conference proceedings. Instead it is a richly illustrated publication which is constructed around five themes : culture, healthcare concepts, Evidence-Based Design, technology and country-specific presentations. With texts by : Cor Wagenaar (ed.), Abram de Swaan, Stephen Verderber, Charles Jencks, Aaron Betsky, Roger Ulrich et al.

Summary:
Architectural photographer Jussi Tiainen has skilfully captured in his photographs the versatile nature of concrete, its smoothness and coarseness, strength and sensitivity, hardness and softness, and light and shadow. For this book he has photographed the best of Finnish concrete architecture from recent years – 16 different buildings, ranging from public buildings to a single-family house, and from new buildings to remodelling projects. Among the architects’ offices included are JKMM Architects, Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, and Heikkinen & Komonen Architects. The article at the beginning of the book by architect Maritta Koivisto, edtior-in-chief of the Finnish journal Betoni [Concrete], opens an interesting angle on the uses of concrete in building and architecture.
