Durant deux décennies, la diffusion des idées nouvelles se fait de manière dispersée : plusieurs tendances se partagent le terrain et plusieurs centres typographiques, en France et ailleurs, sont sollicités par les réformateurs. Avec l’installation définitive de Calvin à Genève en 1541, la propagande religieuse par le livre prend un nouvel essor et Genève acquiert une position dominante. Après une dizaine d’années de diffusion modeste, l’imprimerie genevoise connaît une explosion sans précédent. Le début des guerres de Religion, en 1562, porte un rude coup à l’industrie typographique genevoise. Durant le dernier tiers du siècle, le livre réformé régresse malgré l’ouverture d’ateliers typographiques protestants en France même. Le mouvement réformé perd de son élan. Il se met sur la défensive sans parler de la politisation croissante des conflits confessionnels. À Genève, la perte du marché français contraint les imprimeurs à se recycler dans le livre non religieux, humaniste, juridique, médical, parfois même dans la théologie catholique. La concurrence des imprimeurs de France et des Pays-Bas reste modeste. Bref, après une période d’intense propagande du vivant de Calvin, le livre réformé prend une place modeste moins orienté vers la conquête de nouveaux adeptes que vers la polémique savante ou l’éducation religieuse. Pour la période qui va de 1520 à 1598 et pour un usage restreint à celui de la promotion et de la défense du protestantisme, cet ouvrage montre que les changements du livre sont bien réels, confirmant ainsi toute la richesse et l’intérêt de l’histoire du livre.
