Summary:
This book, devoted to the contributions of the Austro-American artist and architect Friedrich Kiesler to the field of design, presents previously unpublished material relating to his innovative furniture designs and prototypes from the 1930s and 1940s. Letters, diary entries, and photographs document the New York cultural environment in which Friedrich Kiesler lived and worked and illuminate the role he played in the contemporary design scene. After emigrating to New York in 1925, Kiesler soon became an important mediator between European and American positions in the fields of design and architecture. In the ensuing years, he designed furniture and exhibitions and articulated the fundamental principles of a critical theory of functional architecture and design. Such concepts as flexibility, dynamism, and multifunctionality were crucial elements of his theoretical constructs. With an introduction by Monika Pessler, texts by Tulga Beyerle, Harald Krejci, and a preface by Dieter Bogner and Heinz F. Hofer-Wittmann.

Summary:
Nina Mö ntmann's timely book extends the decolonisation debate to the institutions of contemporary art. In a thoughtfully articulated text, illustrated with pertinent examples of best practice, she argues that museums and galleries of contemporary art have a responsibility to "decenter" their institutions, removing from their collections, exhibition policies and infrastructures a deeply embedded Euro-centric cultural focus with roots in the history of colonialism. In this, she argues, they can learn from the example both of anthropological museums (such as the Humboldt Forum in Berlin and the British Museum), which are engaged in debates about the colonial histories of their collections, and of small-scale art spaces (such as La Colonie in Paris or Savvy Contemporary in Berlin), which have the flexibility to initiate different kinds of conversation – for example, by programming exhibitions and events in collaboration with local diasporic communities from the global south.

Summary:
"Leaf plan" will illustrate comprehensive design approaches to address climate change, urban metabolism, temporary uses, landscape multifunctionality, cohabitation through new modes of urban design based on criteria of flexibility and adaptability. Trento is the experimental territory where the innovative process, methodologies and theoretical reflection have been tested above the framework of the three-year research project "TUT Trento Urban Transformation". The book is structured around the five challenges (Ecological, Accessible, Smart, Welcoming and Beauty) proposed by the TUT research group for the Trento Leaf Plan, the new metabolic plan for the city of Trento. Beside the innovative field-test experimentations, the holistic methodological approach proposed by the book will be transferable and adapted in other metropolitan contexts to enhance the urban ecological transition. The publication, edited by the TUT research group, will include theoretical essays, critical selection of reference projects, operational tools, and interviews with experts in ecological transition, sustainable mobility, co-design approach, sharing, and urban resilience.

Summary:
In 1965, leading Swiss furniture company USM patented its signature modular furniture system, USM Haller. This flexible storage solution for both home and office was inspired by Fritz Haller’s modular architecture and designed for infinite reuse and reconfiguration. Considered a design classic, USM Haller is included in the collections of major museums including MoMA and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Released as part of USM’s fiftieth-anniversary celebration of this iconic furniture design, Rethink the Modular examines the role of unit-based systems in the wider context of architecture and design. It combines previously published writings, specially commissioned essays from thinkers and innovators John Thackara and Rick Poyner, and interviews with leading figures in the design world that explain how the concept of the modular influences their work. Interspersed with visual material, the texts reveal the many possibilities created by balancing structure with flexibility, and seek to redefine the place of modularity in modern design history.
