Summary:
This provocative survey reveals how four of the most destructive dictatorships of the 20th century - Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Soviet Russia and Communist China - used graphic design to sell their messages. Explores each regime's distinctive strategies for seducing public opinion and infiltrating people's lives, in media ranging from logos, flags, typefaces and posters to children's books and figurines Remarkable archival photographs set the disturbingly powerful graphic devices in historical context. The perceptive text analyses how these four regimes established the most effective modes of visual propaganda, which were later adopted and adapted by many other dictatorships.

Summary:
The first book release by young Swiss photographer Peter Hauser shows his straightforward, analog black and white pictures of nature and urban landscapes that yield a distinctive observation of perceptual phenomena: rectangles float; shadows fall into hard-edge shapes; surfaces reveal patterns and unlikely grids. Photographer Edward Weston drew a distinction between making pictures to learn about the world and those that impose a vision upon it. It was his intention to make pictures, he once said, not as “an interpretation, a biased opinion of what nature should be, but a revelation — an absolute, impersonal recognition of the significance of facts.”. Peter Hauser's work is subscribing to this mantra.

Summary:
Based on a controversial opinion piece originally published in the New York Times, Reclaiming Travel is a provocative meditation on the meaning of travel from ancient times to the twenty-first century. Ilan Stavans and Joshua Ellison seek to understand why we travel and what has come to be missing from our contemporary understanding of travel. Engaging with canonical and contemporary texts, they explore the differences between travel and tourism, the relationship between travel and memory, the genre of travel writing, and the power of mapmaking, Stavans and Ellison call for a rethinking of the art of travel, which they define as a transformative quest that gives us deeper access to ourselves.

Summary:
It is not a book about colors. It is rather Kenya Hara’s attempt to explore the essence of "White", which he sees as being closely related to the origin of Japanese aesthetics – symbolizing simplicity and subtlety. The central concepts discussed by the author in this publication are emptiness and the absolute void. Good communication is the ability to listen to each other, rather than to press one’s opinion onto the opponent. Kenya Hara compares this form of communication with an "empty container". In visual communication, there are equally signals whose signification is limited, which, like an "empty container," permit signification and do not limit imagination. The Japanese character for white also forms a radical of the character for emptiness.

Summary:
Ai Weiwei, born in the Socialist People's Republic of China, is one of the most important artists of the present global art scene. For his provocative political opinion he had been taken under house detention - he plant a celebration for the official governmental demolition of his Studio. His creations are based on the idea to provoke discussions about their content. For example, he spread about 150 tons of porcelain sunflower seeds on the floor of the Tate Modern in London to remind especially young Chinese people of propagandistic pictures which show Mao Tse-tung in the middle of sunshine and sunflower seeds. This book embraces some of the astonishing works of the exceptional artist.
