Summary:
Green design is the major architectural movement of our time. Throughout the world architects are producing sustainable buildings in an attempt to preserve the environment and our globe's natural resources. However, current strategies for forming sustainable solutions are typically too general and fail to take advantage of critical geographical, environmental, and cultural factors particular to a specific place. By focusing on the Pacific northwest, this book provides essential lessons to architects and students on how sustainable architecture can and should be shaped by the unique conditions of a region. Pacific northwest regionalism has consistently supported an architecture aimed at environmental needs and priorities. This book illuminates the history of a "green trail" in the work of key architects of the northwest. It discusses environmental strategies that work in the region, organized according to nature's most basic elements - earth, air, water, and fire - and their underlying principles and forces. The book focuses on technologies, materials, and methods, with a final section that examines thirteen exceptional northwest buildings in detail and in light of their contributions to sustainable architecture. Critical case studies by northwest architects illustrate some of the best environmental design work in North America. Notable architects from Seattle, Portland, and British Columbia are included. These projects feature innovative design in water and site stewardship, intelligent technologies, passive energy strategies, ecologically sound building materials, and environmentally sensitive energy management systems.

Summary:
The architects of Studio Macías Peredo, based in Guadalajara and led by Salvador Macías Corona, Magui Peredo Arenas, and Diego Quirarte Contreras, believe that the act of designing is inseparable from the act of remembering. Architecture is a living testimony to the culture of a place. The studio is greatly influenced by pre-Hispanic architecture, archaeology, and Mexican colonial styles, and the partners travel extensively, studying vernacular and modern buildings throughout Mexico in order to grasp how they work. This issue presents their work from 2014 to 2024, including the Punta Caliza Hotel, Izamal Water Garden, and tropical residential complexes.

Pigeat retraces his steps through famous and lesser-known gardens around the world, from Roman emperor Hadrian's universalist Tivoli park to Middle Eastern water gardens, and from eighteenth-century British garden design to a modern-day lightning field. Each garden has something to teach about the history of garden design, from the ostentatious design of Versailles, where the sumptuous layout reflects the monarch's power, to the inspired innovation of the Eden Project in England; to the cutting-edge design of the Gas Works Park in Seattle, Washington, which reclaimed a former industrial site for the people of the city to enjoy.

Summary:
In "Dwelling in resistance", Chelsea Schelly examines four alternative U.S. communities-"The Farm," "Twin Oaks," "Dancing Rabbit," and "Earthships"-where electricity, water, heat, waste, food, and transportation practices differ markedly from those of the vast majority of Americans. Schelly portrays a wide range of residential living alternatives utilizing renewable, small-scale, de-centralized technologies. These technologies considerably change how individuals and communities interact with the material world, their natural environment, and one another. Using in depth interviews and compelling ethnographic observations, the book offers an insightful look at different communities' practices and principles and their successful endeavors in sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Hiroshi Sambuichi deciphers the relationships between moving materials (wind, air, water, sun) and topography in an effort to derive the optimal building for a specific site. With his very local approach to architecture, the Hiroshima-based architect has gained a reputation for painstaking investigations into site and context before beginning the design process on each of his projects. He believes it is the appropriate strategy, even if one pursues answers to global concerns. Recently, he has focused particular energy on works related to the Japanese city of Setouchi, featured in this book, which coincides with his exhibition at the Setouchi Triennale 2016.

Summary:
Master printer Michael Flomen brings his darkroom into the environment to create large-scale, avant-garde photograms in confluence with nature. Trading his camera for light-sensitive materials such as photographic paper, he works with water, fireflies, wind, rain, and other natural phenomena to create monumental photograms, revealing things we cannot see with the naked eye. With images that originate in streets to those forged in the wilderness, this monograph presents 182 images and eight critical essays that trace the evolution of Flomen’s vision. His message is particularly vital today, as we learn to mend our relationship with the environment.
