Summary:
Over more than three decades, Gerry Johansson has brought his shrewd and sensitive eye to bear on peripheral landscapes the world over, from Ulan Bator to Antarctica. Spanish Summer sees him return to one of the first places that captured his imagination: the plains of central Spain. The chapel remained etched into Johansson’s memory and, decades later, led him to return and rediscover the country’s architectural heritage, religious significance, and beauty. With these images, a survey is conducted of a landscape into which thousands of years of cultural traces have bedded down. Johansson’s exacting composition and delicate black-and-white tonalities reveal a transient territory in which telephone wires transcend hoary crucifixes, modern plaster meets timeworn stone, and the shadows of industrial megaliths reach blindly across the dust.

Between 2007 and 2009, Chancel made several visits to the United Arab Emirates, and found a country overwhelming in its architectural giganticism and astounding in its determination to domesticate a hostile environment. The resultant feeling of artifice is ubiquitous: the desert grows green, seawater is desalinated and new islands rise out of the sea. Moving from one(...)

Summary:
Between 2007 and 2009, Chancel made several visits to the United Arab Emirates, and found a country overwhelming in its architectural giganticism and astounding in its determination to domesticate a hostile environment. The resultant feeling of artifice is ubiquitous: the desert grows green, seawater is desalinated and new islands rise out of the sea. Moving from one air-conditioned space to another, from apartment to limousine, from limousine to shopping mall, from shopping mall to theme park, Chancel found irresistible pictures to take at every turn. Under his gaze, the United Arab Emirates is laid bare as the realization of the consumer society ideal, in which humans exist in a wholly manmade domain. With his characteristic frontal, distanced framing, devoid of judgment and emotion, Chancel portrays a country that is at once baffling and fascinating.

Summary:
The first exhibition catalog for emerging photographer/filmmaker Sebastian Stumpf explores the gaps in public space and the accessibility of pictorial space in various media. The video project documented in this catalog is part of a group called Leaving White Spaces, which are produced in different art institutions and then projected at the site of their production. There are also 28 photographs of Stumpf literally standing on doors and walls between the gaps of buildings in Tokyo. While there are clear signs of life, the only figure inhabiting these architectural spaces is Stumpf's. The Leipzig-based artist, a student of renowned photographer Timm Rautert, is included in the upcoming 2010 Berlin Biennale. His photographs flash us back and forth between our lived experiences of cities and the possibilities available in the gaps.

Summary:
This is the latest of Donovan Wylie's (born 1971) books that explore the architecture of the Northern Ireland conflict. While Wylie's earlier publications document disappearing military structures, ''Housing Plans for the Future'' focuses on the legacy of architectural containment in urban areas today. Wylie took these photos during walks through a number of social-housing neighborhoods in inner-city Belfast, which look eerily similar. While the built environments at first appear benign, even mundane, sustained looking reveals how they purposely control vision and movement. Walls block vehicle access, houses are inverted to face away from neighboring communities and minimize potential antagonism, and excessive street lighting ensures visibility. These defensive structures, built in the 1970s and '80s and still populated today, are a powerful and largely unrecognized legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Summary:
This volume tells the story of La Nouvelle Maison, the fourth and final home of the Belgian architect Henry van de Velde, which he designed for himself and his family in Tervuren, Belgium. Built in 1928 and recently restored to exacting standards, the residence embodies van de Velde’s mature vision of rational, human-centered design. Drawing on archival materials, newly commissioned photography, and the insights of leading experts, the book reveals the building’s architectural significance as a paragon of European modernism. It also discusses the challenges of returning the home to its original form, including sourcing historically accurate materials, conserving original joinery and finishes, and adapting the building to meet modern standards without compromising van de Velde’s holistic vision.

Summary:
This palm-sized book presents two of the most innovative structures of the modern age (and two of the most important art museums)in one package. The book highlights the New York Guggenheim, Frank Lloyd Wright's crowning achievement, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, recently designed to high acclaim by Frank O. Gehry. One half of the book contains 30 duotone photographs of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. These images were taken in 1959, shortly after the building's completion, by Ezra Stoller, one of the pre-eminent architectural photographers in the world and the founder of the renowned Esto architectural photography studio. Flipping the book over reveals the other half, which consists of 34 colour images of the Bilbao Museum, taken by Jeff Goldberg, an Esto architectural photographer and winner of the 1999 Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects.
