Random Movies (1972)
AP207.S1.1972.PR06
Description:
The project series documents the film "Random Movies" produced by Pettena in 1972. The project consists of a film created by Pettena with randomly selected filmstrips of film reels that were going to be thrown away. The film was then presented to the public in Salt Lake City without anyone looking at the content before. The filmstrips "were out-of-date promotional films, many of them in two copies, commercial advertisements as well as electoral propaganda. So the screening proved particularly provocative for an audience that had come to attend a “cultured” lecture and found themselves, in an insistent manner, treated as an audience of “advertising skits.” "[1] The project series contains project descriptions in English and in Italian, a film still and a digital version of the film. Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation "Paper/Midwestern Ocean" initially presented in 1971 at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The installation consists of strips of paper hanging from strings that fill the entire room. Participants are invited to cut their way into the room with a pair of scissors and all join together in the centre of the room to create an open space. The participants then all gather in the central space where Pettena gives a lecture while the audience sits on the piles of cut paper covering the floor. This installation was also presented in seven other editions from 2009 to 2017, including in the exhibition "The Death of the Audience" in Vienna; Secession in 2009; in the exhibition "Erre. Variations Labyrinthiques" at the Centre Pompidou in Metz in 2011-2012; and in the exhibition "Architetture Naturali/Gianni Pettena" at Kunst Meran in 2017. The project series contains a drawing, photographs of the first edition of the installation at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and photographs of the five following editions from 2009 to 2013. Applausi [Applause] (1968)
AP207.S1.1968.PR05
Description:
This project series documents Pettena's design for "Applausi", a suitcase split in half to create two flashing signs with the word "Applausi". The signs were designed for the music performance by Vittorio Gelmetti, "La descrittione del gran paese" a post-pop opera for which Pettena was also in charge of the scene direction. The performance was presented at the 6th Festival of Avant-Garde Music at the Teatro Biondo, in Palermo, in December 1968. The signs were placed on each side of the stage, toward the audience. "The text, together with others that indicated the piano, the singer and the cello, reminded the audience of the habits of an illiterate public participating in a televised show." [1] The "Applausi" signs were also presented in the exhibition "The living currency" in Varsaw, at the Teatr Dramatyczny in 2010, and at the 6th Berlin Biennale at the Hau1, Die lebende Münze, in 2010. The project series contains photographs of the 'Applausi' signs, a drawing of the sign, and a draft poster showing the display of the stage for Vittorio Gelmetti performance at the 6th Festival of Avant-Garde Music. The project series also includes photographs of the music performance, a video of Pettena and the sign at the Berlin Biennale in 2010, and project descriptions in English and Italian. The project series documents the performance "La Mia Idea Di Architettura" held at Base, Spazio per l'arte in Florence, in 2014. The performance consists of a lecture given by Pettena, standing in a window frame, speaking to people passing in the street. "To illustrate his idea of architecture, Pettena chose to address not only experts in the field but also a random audience, passers-by on the street as he spoke." [1] The lecture was held in the context of an exhibition on Radical Tools, the Florentine group of the ‘radical’ movement architects and artists. Each protagonist of the group were invited to present a lecture. The project series contains photographs of the performance. Description:
Project records document OCEAN North’s design for their competition entry for the Töölö Football Stadium in Helsinki in 1997. The project was titled Open Arena by OCEAN North. The site for the football stadium was in the Töölö neighbourhood, between a park area including the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, and a residential area. OCEAN North’s entry was a building that would integrate with its natural surroundings while being able to accommodate a variety of activities and events. The structure for Open Arena has three topological surfaces. The first provides stadium access to the players and the public, and includes services such as restaurant, cafeteria, and bars. Its shape aims to integrate with the natural landscape. The second contains the audience seating areas, including VIP and press areas, and aimed to arrange the audience as if it was loosely dispersed on a hillside. The third topological surface consists of the roof. The Töölö Football Stadium marks the introduction of the Channelling Systems process, defining building’s integration to its surroundings and distributing functions across the structure. Records show different stages of the design process and include two digitized photographs of Plexiglas sections that were used to physically explore the design. Digital files are grouped under categories such as Board images, Board lay-out, Graft, Sections, Siteplans, digital model images, scanned plans and site images. This last directory contains digitized photographs of the grounds surrounding the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. All drawings are vector or raster images of the whole or parts of the structure, with some including the identifications of the structure’s parts. Project records also include preliminary or working plans. Most were drawn to scale on paper and some were printed from CAD drawings. They chiefly reflect the design work to define the surfaces and shapes of the stadium’s structure. Description:
This project series documents a theatre for the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in Jammu, India from 1969-1973. The theatre consisted of two square shaped volumes, turned on their axis to overlap at their corners, with the stage located at the overlap. The building's exterior, faced in stone, was highlighted by three levels of verandas and showed the exposed roof frame. A free-standing cylindrical volume next to the main building served as the emergency exit, with spiral stairs wrapping its exterior. This project also included the design of furniture for the theatre, most notably the audience seats. Two additional buildings were proposed, an office block and an Institute of Music and Fine Arts, but they do not appear to have been built. The theatre was renamed the Abhinav Theatre soon after its completion. This project is recorded through drawings and correspondence dating from 1969-1973. The drawings are mostly originals and include plans, elevations, sections, details and furniture drawings.

Description:
The project series documents the performance "Performance Fotofosforescente" carried out at the Palazzo Grassi, in Venice, for the International Festival "The Art of Performance" in 1977. The performance consisted of a phosphorescent figure descending the grand staircase of the main entrance to the courtyard of the Palazzo Grassi, crossing the atrium through the audience, and heading down the steps towards the Grand Canal to finally disappear into the water. The performer is holding in his hands a three-dimensional phosphorescent Escher cube, the only source of light while the courtyard is in almost total darkness. "The evocative setting, the music, the darkness and this moving light produced an effect of “working” of the space, somewhere between the real and the imaginary [...]." [1] The project series contains a draft and a more final storyboard of the performance, Pettena's handwritten notes, and photographs of the performance at the Palazzo Grassi.
