AP207.S1.1973.PR03
Description:
The project series documents "Spazio Vuoto Riservato A Gianni Pettena", an installation that consists of a banner with the words "Spazio Vuoto Riservato A Gianni Pettena". The first version of the banner dates from 1973, but it was initially used for the exhibition "Contribution" in Rennes in 2008, where Pettena, one of the artists invited to carry out interventions in symbolic locations around the city, chose to install his banner inside the market. The banner was used also in Pettena's solo exhibition at the Galerie Mercier & Associés, in Paris in 2011, and again at the Spazio MEGA in Milan, in 2017. "Pettena not only introduced the artistic intervention into an environment that was alien to it, but extended the provocation to the point of laying claim to absolute freedom for the artist." [1] The project series contains a sign with the words "Spazio Vuoto Riservato A Gianni Pettena", possibly the sign designed in 1973, photographs of the second edition in Rennes, photographs of the third edition of the installation at the Galerie Mercier et Associés, and photographs of the fourth edition of the installation at the Spazio MEGA. AP207.S2
Description:
The series documents Pettena’s activities as a curator and exhibition designer from 1980 to 2004 and includes materials for most of the related publications. The material in this series relates to fifteen out of the over twenty-five exhibitions designed by Pettena, which were presented in various galleries in Italy. Pettena’s exhibitions include installations on contemporary architecture, such as an exhibition on avant-garde architects from London, exhibitions on Hans Hollein, on Richard Meier, on Ettore Sottsass and on Ettore Sottsass Jr. He also designed many exhibitions on architects of the Radical movement and the evolution of their work from the beginning of the movement to more recent years. The series also contains material for Pettena’s work on exhibitions on contemporary landscape architecture and the evolution of urban parks. Also included are a few documents related to exhibitions on Pettena’s work, either group exhibitions or solo ones, and curated by others. The series contains research materials, such as publications and reference photographs, correspondence related to exhibition planning and the accompanying publications, exhibition proposals, and some installation designs and concept development notes. The series also contains draft texts, and documents related to the image selection process for the exhibition catalogues. Finally, the series contains installation views, photographs of exhibition openings and some draft exhibition and publication texts for exhibitions on Pettena’s work but that were not curated by him.

Professional papers
AP206.S3
Description:
The Professional papers series, circa 1950-2008, records the professional activities of Aditya Prakash throughout his career up until his death in 2008. His work in architecture, art, photography, academia and theatre are documented through textual records, drawings, photographic materials, ephemera, books, serials and sound recordings. The earliest materials in this series show Prakash’s interest in architectural photography early in his career through photographs, slides, and negatives taken by him. These materials, dating from before 1970, show most prominently his projects, people, villages and cityscapes. Materials dating from after 1968 show Prakash’s move into academia and his solo architectural career. During this time, the records document Prakash’s research interests on subjects such as urbanization, Chandigarh, the Modular and the environment, through drawings, newspaper articles, government and committee reports, correspondence and presentation materials. Likewise, his teaching is recorded through overhead transparencies, drawings and notes. The series also shows Prakash’s involvement in the professional community, including event photographs, correspondence and records documenting conferences, events and his discussion group Our Get Togethers. Correspondence with architect Charles Correa and frequent letters between Prakash and writer Mulk Raj Anand are of note here. Apart from his architectural career, Prakash’s work as a modern artist is well recorded through drawings, sketchbooks, and photographic reproductions of his art, mostly dating from after 1980. His interest in art as well as his community involvement are documented through exhibition ephemera, correspondence, and exhibition reviews and writings on his artwork. His role as the president of the Lalit Kala Akademi is also documented through publications, event photographs and correspondence. Finally, Prakash’s involvement in theatre, specifically with his amateur theatre troop Abhinet, is captured through scripts, photographs of performances and play reviews.
