Summary:
For 30 years, David T. Hanson (born 1948) has made photographs that are widely celebrated for their powerful depictions of the American landscape and its dramatic transformation and despoilment by humans. His newest collection, Wilderness to Wasteland, presents four series of previously unpublished and unexhibited photographs from Hanson’s early work, made between 1982 and 1987. Atomic City documents the former nuclear boomtown in Idaho, site of the world’s first nuclear power plant and first reactor meltdown. The Richest Hill on Earth is a study of the vast copper mines, housing and surrounding wasteland of Butte, Montana. The eponymous series is a dynamic group of aerial and ground-view photographs of hazardous waste sites, while the final series, Twilight in the Wilderness, comprises spectacular night views of industrial sites for power production. Together, these photographs constitute a haunting meditation on a ravaged landscape.

Summary:
Our ideas of wilderness have evolved dramatically over the past one hundred and fifty years, from a view of wild country as an inviolable ''place apart'' to one that exists only within the matrix of human activity. This shift in understanding has provoked complicated questions about the importance of the wild in American environmentalism, as well as new aesthetic expectations as we reframe the wilderness as (to some degree) a human creation. ''Wild visions'' is distinctive in its union of landscape photography and environmental thought, a merging of short, thematic essays with a striking visual narrative. Often, the wild is viewed in binary terms: either revered as sacred and ecologically pure or dismissed as spoiled by human activities. This book portrays wilderness instead as an evolving gamut of understandings, a collage of views and ideas that is still in process.

Summary:
Fragments of Wilderness City reviews the work of renowned architect Brian Avery. This publication presents perspectives from academics and architecture historians, exploring projects in India and the Middle East; major cultural commissions such as the National Film Theatre, the Museum of the Moving Image, London Transport Museum, and the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts' headquarters in Bloomsbury, London; masterplanning work for Oxford Street in London, The Horniman Museum, and the Avenue of the Emirates in Abu Dhabi. Alongside profiles of their innovative work in product design and within the workplace is an essay by director Bryan Avery, providing insights into his notion of the sustainable 'wilderness city'. This manifesto sets out a vision of an accountable architectural and planning approach to the contemporary city, situated in a natural landscape and taking on board references to both the walled cities of the medieval period and the self-contained urban environments of the twentieth century 'new towns'.
