Shifting between the Pop-like and the Surreal, the Minimal and the metaphorical, the figurative and the abstract, the psychotic and the erotic, with references to "free love" and psychedelia, it seemed to embody all that the 1960s was about, while at the same time denying the prevailing aesthetics of its time. The installation itself was a room lined with mirrored panels and carpeted with several hundred brightly polka-dotted soft fabric protrusions into which the visitor was completely absorbed. Kusama simply called it "a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses." A precursor of performance-based feminist art practice, media pranksterism, and "Occupy" movements, Kusama (born in 1929) was once as well known as her admirers - Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, and Joseph Cornell. In this first monograph on an epoch-defining work, Jo Applin looks at the installation in detail and places it in the context of subsequent art practice and theory as well as Kusama's own (as she called it) "obsessional art." Applin also discusses Kusama's relationship to her contemporaries, particularly those working with environments, abstract-erotic sculpture, and mirrors, and those grappling with such issues as abstraction, eroticism, sexuality, and softness. The work of Lee Lozano, Claes Oldenburg, Louise Bourgeois, and Eva Hesse is seen anew when considered in relation to Yayoi Kusama's.

Situé entre un atelier de maintenance RATP, le périphérique et des tours de béton, le bâtiment déserté n'attirait pas l'attention. Et pourtant... Une fois à l'intérieur, ils ont découvert 40 000 m2 de murs vierges répartis sur quatre étages dont deux plongés dans l'obscurité. Des salles immenses et sans fin où des centaines de personnes avaient vécu avant d'être chassées par la force publique du jour au lendemain... Pendant un an, dans le plus grand secret, les deux artistes se sont rendus dans ce lieu mystique quasi quotidiennement pour y peindre et organiser une résidence artistique sauvage unique en son genre. Ils ont demandé à une quarantaine de graffeurs français et de photographes, issus de la première à la dernière génération du mouvement, de les y accompagner, pour un jour ou une semaine. Chacun a promis ne pas rien révéler du bâtiment ou du projet... Ensemble, ils ont créé un mausolée, un temple dédié à leur culture underground en passe de disparaître à l'ère du street art et de son esthétique pop mondialisée. De cette expérience, ils ont tiré un film en stop motion de plus de 8 000 images qu'ils comptent diffuser gratuitement sur internet. Ce livre se propose de retracer les grandes étapes visuelles de cette expérience hors du commun.

Gracing the cover jacket of Rachel Harrison's highly anticipated second monograph is an informal monument to the man who holds the Americas' namesake. The only hint to this memorial for the 15th century Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, is an apple resting on an outcropping of neon-green cement; of course the fact that the apple is not only artificial but has a bite taken out of it suggests otherwise to the discovery of these "Edenic" continents. This slight yet important fact raises the basic concept of if i did it: the active disavowal of art's political function as a museological testament to the "progress" of social history. By tossing off this monumental propensity, Harrison builds "antimonuments;" not so much sculptures but lumpen aggregates of pop psychology. In addition to Vespucci, throughout the book, one finds that celebrities Johnny Depp and Tiger Woods are included in a pantheon with John Locke and 18th century Corsican revolutionary Pasquale Paoli, meanwhile Al Gore checks the temperature, Claude Levi-Strauss checks the door with a taxidermied hen and rooster and a bi-curious Alexander the Great is the master of ceremonies. The title, taken from O.J. Simpson's infamous "hypothetical" account of his murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Donald Goldman, groups this role call of high- and low- brow idols into a nonhierarchical tableau where cultural and political value are allotted only where one sees fit.
