Summary:
The photographs and essays in this combination artist book and monograph reveal the invisible histories of human enterprise, idealism and trauma embedded in the work by Berlin artist Stephanie Kloss. Eight bodies of work in black and white and color made in locations as diverse as Israel, Japan, the United States, Germany and Greece, from 2006 to 2014, explore the mythos and utopianism of architecture. An idyllic Canary Island bears scant traces of Otto Muehl s Actionist commune and sexual crimes; the mute currents of the Mississippi Delta belie its devastation first by Hurricane Katrina and subsequently by the BP oil spill. The commonality and one could say, colonization of modernist architectural form rather than the peculiarities of place, nation or time seems to attract her lens. In Weltausstellung, Kloss speaks a collective photographic language that warns against the ease and peril of forgetfulness.

Summary:
The modernist architect Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex at Chandigarh, India, remains one of the major touchstones of 20th-century architecture. Commissioned by the government of India after gaining independence, the complex of brutalist concrete structures has become a pilgrimage site for architecture lovers and scholars for the past six decades. These structures have been photographed many times, but the Japanese photographer Yoshihiro Makino takes a different approach. Instead of documenting the buildings in typical fashion, the photographs become meditations on the intentions of the project, and of Le Corbusier’s architectural philosophy. Composed of two accordion-folded books in a cloth slipcase, Makino and revered art director Tamotu Yagi create a double-sided visual experience revealing on the front side of the accordion books an explosion of saturated color exteriors and interiors, then on the backsides details and rarely seen rooms in lush black & white.

Summary:

Summary:
From his images of the Chateau of Versailles under restoration to the faded grandeur of Havana, to scenes of devastation from Chernobyl after the nuclear explosion and a New Orleans ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, Robert Polidori is drawn to detritus, shattered worlds and elegant ruin. Often considered an architectural photographer, Polidori captures more than buildings: his highly detailed views of interiors evoke both the intimate and the mysterious, where in the humanity of these photos is felt in its very absence, in the traces left behind in vacant spaces once inhabited. Chronophagia is a sampling of Polidori's many famous projects. This volume contains the artist's own selection of more than 100 photographs, from the classics to several rarely seen images. The result is a beautifully edited compendium of Polidori's 28-year career and a visual exploration of the liminal space between past and present, of worlds on the brink of disappearance.

Summary:
In the late fifteenth century, clocks acquired minute hands. A century later, second hands appeared. But it wasn't until the 1850s that instruments could recognize a tenth of a second, and, once they did, their impact on modern science and society was profound. Tracing debates about the nature of time, causality, and free will, as well as the introduction of modern technologies - telegraphy, photography, cinematography - Jimena Canales locates the reverberations of this "perceptual moment" throughout culture. Revealing the history behind this infinitesimal interval, Revealing the history behind this infinitesimal interval, A Tenth of a Second sheds new light on modernity and illuminates the work of important thinkers of the last two centuries.

Summary:
The Clyfford Still Museum was designed by the leading architectural practice Allied Works and its founder, Brad Cloepfil. The building creates space for the voice and artistic vision of American painter Clyfford Still (1904–1980), housing the vast majority of his creative output over a sixty-year period. The museum’s design is inspired by the work of Still and by its monumental context: the site is located at the intersection of prairie and mountains, within an urban district of major cultural buildings, vacant lots, historic housing, and new development. The building looks to the earth as a source of silence and profound connection to the elemental forces the artist explored through his painting. This publication presents the vision and realization of the museum from initial concepts to completion. A rich collection of stories, artifacts, documents, and conversations trace the evolution of the building and Allied Works’ unique creative process. New essays and photography examine its significance within contemporary architectural discourse and the singular experience of the completed work.
