Summary:
This publication is a photographic essay that takes us through spaces of international airports, or more specifically, the spaces of these airports that are classified as “transit areas,” that is in between states and nations, although within them. Whereas a border is generally conceived of as a line between two territories, and not as a space in itself, the transit area is exactly such a space. In Geyer and Sander's passage through these areas, they investigate how these spaces, on the one hand, constitute and differentiate between territories, and on the other hand, spatialize the gap through a gestural, architectural, and linguistic vocabulary of hallways, doors, lines, checks, instructions, processes of identification, recognition, and namings that all lead to denied or granted passage. As the question of passage is central for the notion of a border, the book is conceived as a flip book: a number of still-images which, when flipped, gives the illusion of movement.

Summary:
In recent years Russian cities have visibly changed. The architectural heritage of the Soviet period has not been fully acknowledged. As a result many unique modernist buildings have been destroyed or changed beyond recognition. Russian photographer Arseniy Kotov intends to document these buildings and their surroundings before they are lost forever. He likes to take pictures in winter, during the 'blue hour,' which occurs immediately after sunset or just before sunrise. At this time, the warm yellow colors inside apartment-block windows contrast with the twilight gloom outside. To Kotov, this atmosphere reflects the Soviet period of his imagination. His impression of this time is unashamedly idealistic: he envisages a great civilization, built on a fair society, which hopes to explore nature and conquer space. From the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the desert steppes of Kazakhstan to the grim monolithic high-rise dormitory blocks of inner-city Volgograd, Kotov captures the essence of the post-Soviet world.

The Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura was born in 1952. During his architectural studies he worked for Alvaro Siza, and in 1980 he opened his own office in Porto. Today Souto de Moura, with his purist yet atmospheric structures is one of the most well-known architects on the Iberian peninsula. “I began practically at the very beginning and concentrated on the essence of architecture. The most fundamental element is naturally the wall.” Souto de Moura succeeded in combining Portugal´s strong tradition of stone masonry with abstract modern forms, creating an architecture of compelling beauty. Werner Blaser conveys through expressive photography the elemental and timeless nature of Souto de Moura´s buildings focussing in particular on his use of stone as a building material.

Summary:
"Powerhouse" is the first book on the singular life and career of American architect Judith Chafee (1932-1998). Chafee was an unrepentant modernist on the forefront of sustainable design. Her architecture shows great sensitivity to place, especially the desert landscapes of Arizona. Chafee was also a social justice advocate and a highly respected woman in a male-dominated profession. After graduating from the Yale University Architecture School, where her advisor was Paul Rudolph, she went on to work in the offices of legends including Rudolph, Walter Gropius, Eero Saarinen, and Edward Larrabee Barnes. In addition to her architectural legacy, her decades of teaching helped shape a generation of architects. Chafee's drawings and archival images of her work are complemented by photography by Ezra Stoller and Bill Timmerman.
