In his lifetime, Kotéra was a symbol of the spirit of modernity, a pivotal role-player in early 20th-century Czech fine art culture. A student of Otto Wagner, friend of Josef Hoffman and early member of the Viennese Secession, Kotéra brought international standards to Czechoslovakia, introducing his country's architects to the work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright while retaining an interest in folk structures. Some of his most notable structures and designs include the City Museum in Hradec Králové, the Mácha villa in Bechyne, his own villa and studio in Vinohrady, and his housing colony for railway employees in Louny.

Summary:
Of the architects who made Palm Springs a crucible of midcentury American modernism, William F. Cody (1916-1978) was one of the most prolific, diverse, and iconic. Directing a practice ranging from residences to commercial centers and industrial complexes to master plans, Cody's designs are so recognizable that they provide visual shorthand for what is widely hailed as "Desert Modern." While his architecture was disciplined and technically innovative, Cody did not practice an austere modernism; he imbued in his projects a love for social spaces, rich with patterns, texture, color, and art. Though the majority of Cody's built work was concentrated in California and Arizona, he had commissions in other western states, Hawaii, Mexico, Honduras, and Cuba. From icons like the Del Marcos Hotel (1946), to inventive country clubs like the Eldorado (1957), to houses for celebrities (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Walt Disney), Cody's projects defined the emerging West Coast lifestyle that combined luxury, leisure, and experimental design. Cody also pushed the boundaries of engineering, with beams and roof slabs so thin that his buildings seemed to defy gravity.

Summary:
The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the radical architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new "stone monuments" capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom. The collaboration between Beatrice Lampariello and False Mirror Office lead to a monograph focused on the UFO’s work and an evaluation of their legacy relative to contemporary architecture.

Summary:
"Architecture, film, and the in-between: spatio-cinematic betwixt" looks at the cinematic representation of architectural in-betweenness, as well as the in-between spaces within the architectural structure of films. As films seek to depict architecture in evolving, original ways, they can also expand betwixt areas, imbuing them with horror or fantasy. Spies can escape inside unconvincingly stable ducts and children can slide through pipes with no discernible function. And just as subway routes and airplanes can stitch together two destinations, loopholes and magic architectural features can connect distinct realms via interstitial spaces. Contributors discuss a range of architects and filmmakers, including John Lautner, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Agnès Varda, and Mies van der Rohe, and take diverse approaches to the liminal space between architecture and film, touching on existential experience, post-phenomenological thinking, sociopolitical cinearchitecture, fictive ecologies, and more. Collecting essays by well-respected architects, thinkers, and philosophers—such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Beatriz Colomina, and Graham Harman—the book includes imagery and infographics that map filmic spaces, diagram narratives, and visualize the hidden spatial dimensions of movies.

Summary:
The Gateway Arch casts its shadow across the Mississippi River and the city skyline of St. Louis, yet the history of architecture in that city stretches far beyond the towering "gateway to the West." Modern Architecture in St. Louis offers the first in-depth survey of the exciting evolution of modern architecture in the heart of the Midwest, an evolution that began during the flowering of mid-century American modernism. Established architectural scholars here explore the nationally and internationally significant aspects of modern architecture in St. Louis during the postwar period, with essays on subjects ranging from the creation of the Arch to the role played by the Washington University School of Architecture. Archival photographs and drawings augment the scholars' historical analyses, and statements by alumni and faculty of the School of Architecture, including Gyo Obata and Fumihiko Maki, are also featured. Modern Architecture in St. Louis is a valuable work of architectural history that unearths the critical contribution of St. Louis to American design and modernism. Eric Mumford is associate professor at the Washington University School of Architecture and author of The CIAM Discourse on Urbanism, 1928-1960.

In architecture, as in food, local is an idea whose time has come. Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not new. Yet, the way it has evolved in the past few years is indeed defining a new movement. From the rammed-earth houses of Rick Joy and Pacific Northwest timber houses of Tom Kundig, to the community-built structures of Rural Studio and Francis Kere, designers everywhere are championing an architecture that exists from, in, and for a specific place.

Summary:
The town of Schlins in Vorarlberg has long been a Mecca for all those with an interest in clay construction. On the steep southern slope, the clay builder Martin Rauch worked together with Zurich architect Roger Boltshauser to erect his new artist’s residence. From its foundation all the way to its fl at roof, it is made entirely of excavated soil from the site on which it is built: the floors and arched ceilings, the plasterwork on ceiling and walls, the washstands, tiles, and stairs – all are made from the single material clay in its various forms. The house is a show house as well as the document of a unique collaboration. At the same time, it is a striking example of how, with the structural and design limitations of this «soft» and massive building technique, a spatially and tectonically adequate design can be achieved – and how an archaic building technique can be used in a contemporary manner. With today’s renewed focus on energetic and ecological consequences, clay construction, with its special ecological, organic, and aesthetic qualities, is again becoming a subject of widespread interest. The structure presented in this book has received national and international awards and represents a milestone in the field.

Summary:
In this first book on the work and vision of the architecture firm Schaum/Shieh, founders Troy Schaum and Rosalyne Shieh invite their readers into the studio. This is a real and conceptual space where they work on recurring themes: operating within the city at the scale of building (urbanism); the interrelation of materiality, units of form, and building products (tectonics); and ways to collaborate with the life of a building in its context (preservation), among others. In addition to visual material drawn from all stages of the design process, what is equally important to "Blanking" is what is said and what can be heard in the studio. So much of architectural thinking and knowledge is presented, formulated, and traded in spoken words: the pinup, the meeting, the walkthrough. This material is the medium within which projects are formulated. Those exchanges inform this book, in which ideas and knowledge that are usually only spoken are written down and made accessible to readers.
