Starting with the buildings that defined St. Paul’s - Minnesota founding in the 1840s, through the great construction boom of the mid-1880s, to the stylish and artistic work of Period Revival architects in the 1920s and 1930s and the rise of modernism after World War II, the authors showcase the city’s rich architectural heritage. Concluding the exploration, the book’s final chapter sheds light on the architecture of present-day St. Paul. " St. Paul’s architecture " presents more than 225 notable surviving buildings and the history of several neighborhoods of the city.

Summary:
The importance of protecting significant buildings from decay and destruction would seem to be undeniable. Yet whilst the majority of buildings of merit constructed before the Second World War have been highlighted as worthy of protection there is much indifference, and in some cases hostility towards many important post war buildings. These deserve to receive wider formal recognition but in many cases continue to be mistreated or even demolished. This book examines many of the philosophical and practical issues surrounding the conservation of modern buildings and also the problems faced by building practitioners in dealing with buildings constructed in a wider range of styles and materials than at any other time. Climate change in particular has forced change in the way in which we think about buildings, with the pressures to address issues of energy efficiency becoming more urgent and likely to have consequences that may alter the perceived architectural and historic interest of modern and traditional buildings alike.

Summary:
Commissions for buildings and works of art from public authorities or private clients are an important means of promoting art in public areas, and they offer artists the opportunity of realising projects in an architectural space outside that of the museum. For architects these artists often provide a first interpretation of emergent architecture with its spatial functions, and in this way they generate so-called “hybrid zones” because the architectural function can also be perceived as a work of art in the context of public art. This book presents in text and image some 20 interventions and projects in Basel and Zurich, created from the 1990's to the present day. Cross references to other European cities help to provide an overview of the international debate, and it initiates a controversial discussion on the present and future possibilities for art and building through statements and text contributions. These are provided by architects including Diener & Diener, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Märkli, Morger & Degelo, artists such as Renée Levi, Jean Pfaff, Rémy Zaugg, art historians and other experts in relevant fields.
