Summary:
Craig Ellwood was one of the finest California architects of the postwar era. By the time he was thirty he had already contributed three of the seminal Case Study Houses and received the São Paulo Award for his Courtyard Apartments. Subsequently influenced by Mies, he went on to design a lengthy series of stark minimalist structures, peaking with the Pasadena Art Center. With the support of John Entenza, editor of the influential magazine Arts & Architecture, Ellwood was, until the late 1960s, widely considered to be one of the most innovative American architects of the period. This book documents all the Ellwood buildings that remain on the records, a total of some ninety structures. Its 600 illustrations include comprehensive archival photography (including Ellwood’s own pictures and others by Julius Shulman), original drawings, and, for those buildings that remain in good condition, recent images. Due to the loss of most of the original drawings, 80 floor plans have been redrawn for this publication, making this book as close a record of Ellwood’s complete works as is possible today.

Summary:
Wilkinson perceives the landscape of Singapore for the lush fertile rainforest that it is: a vast Henri Rousseau painting in which he can build. In his houses, the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred, a reciprocal relationship with the landscape is established, and a tropical ideal has been created. The architecture is always expressive and each of Wilkinson’s houses is defined by a set of formal gestures that are both playful and practical: a tactile indulgence is always underpinned by a commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. Landscaping, planting and the use of water are crucial to these houses, which draw upon the whimsy and decorative detailing of Arts and Crafts architecture, and the spatial freedom of such architects as Schindler and Wright. This monograph feature twenty-one of Wilkinson’s houses, built over the last decade. Each project is illustrated by colour photography, and is documented with formal drawings, concept sketches and project descriptions. An introductory essay examines the architecture in the context of 21st century Singapore, and documents Wilkinson’s background, influences and design philosophy.

Summary:
Sluminsider is a choral narrative that attempts to reveal the complexity of the slum of Mathare, one of the biggest shantytowns in Nairobi. The project of expansion of a street school, the Why Not Junior Academy, and the process of environmental improvement of the surrounding area, where a community agriculture initiative has been set up to replace an unauthorized dump, is the starting point from which to combine experiences and identities from very different disciplines, including architecture, design, agriculture, photography and video. This project is one of the case studies used for comparison and dialogue with the city of São Paulo and the São Paulo Calling research project, which examined the informal settlements of Rome, Nairobi, Medellin, Mumbai, Moscow and Baghdad. For six months, an exhibition analyzed the characteristics, differences and causes of informal settlements, developing six workshops in the field in different favelas of São Paulo and organizing size encounters that made São Paulo the world capital of the debate on transformation of contemporary cities.

Summary:
A landscape architect, city planner, and creative genius who transformed the American landscape, Frederick Law Olmsted was a man of passionate vision and drive. He defined the profession of landscape architecture and designed America’s most outstanding landscapes, many gorgeously illustrated here, including New York’s Central Park, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, the U. S. Capitol grounds, and the Biltmore Estate. During a remarkable forty-year career that began in the mid-1800s, Olmsted created the first major urban parks and park systems in this country, along with widely influential suburban residential communities. He was a pivotal figure in the movement to create scenic reservations and national parks, such as Niagara Falls, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, and he contributed to the design of many academic campuses, including Stanford University. A comprehensive view of the man and his work, this updated edition of the Rizzoli classic marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of this seminal American landscape designer and includes new photography of Olmsted’s masterworks Central and Prospect parks, as well as a new introduction and new final chapter by the author that examines Olmsted’s ongoing influence.

Summary:
The photographer Édouard Baldus (1813-1889), a central figure in the early development of French photography and acknowledged in his day as a pioneer in the still-experimental field, was widely acclaimed both for his aesthetic sensitivity and for his technical prowess. Establishing a new mode of representing architecture and describing the emerging modern landscape with magnificent authority, he enjoyed high patronage in the 1850s and 1860s. Yet, despite the artist's renown during his lifetime, his name is all but unknown today, his work savored only by connoisseurs. This book, the first to chronicle the life and career of this important artist, brings his work once more before the public. The superb quality of the reproductions captures the subtle tones and soft matte surfaces of the original prints, many of which are published here for the first time. Baldus made his reputation with views of the monuments of Paris and the south of France, with dramatic landscape of the Auvergne, with photographs of the New Louvre, and with a poignant record of the devastating floods of 1856. But it is his two railroad albums -- the first commissioned in 1855 by Baron James de Rothschild for presentation to Queen Victoria, the second in 1861 by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railroad company -- that are his greatest achievement. Here he brought together his earlier architectural and scenic images with bold geometric views of the modern landscape -- railroad tracks, stations, bridges, viaducts, and tunnels -- to address the influence of technology (of which both the railroad and the camera are prime examples). In so doing, Baldus anticipated the concerns of Impressionnist painters a decade later and those of many artists of our own day, meeting his task with a clarity and directness not since surpassed.

Summary:
From the late nineteenth through most of the twentieth century, the evangelical Protestant Grenfell Mission in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, created a network of hospitals, schools, orphanages, stores, and industries with the goal of bringing health and organized society to settler fisherfolk and Indigenous populations. This infrastructure also served to support resource extraction of fisheries off Labrador's coast. In 'Slow Disturbance' Rafico Ruiz engages with the Grenfell Mission to theorize how settler colonialism establishes itself through what he calls infrastructural mediation—the ways in which colonial lifeworlds, subjectivities, and affects come into being through the creation and maintenance of infrastructures. Drawing on archival documents, maps, interviews with municipal officials, teachers, and residents, as well as his field photography, Ruiz shows how the mission's infrastructural mediation—from its attempts to restructure the local economy to the aerial surveying and mapping of the coastline—responded to the colony's environmental conditions in ways that expanded the bounds of the settler frontier. By tracing the mission's history and the mechanisms that enabled its functioning, Ruiz complicates understandings of mediation and infrastructure while expanding current debates surrounding settler colonialism and extractive capitalism.

Summary:
"Modernism: designing a new world" is the first book to explore Modernism in the designed world from a truly international perspective, and across all the arts. It offers a reassessment of the idea of Modernism and reveals the fundamental ways in which it has shaped our own world and its visual culture. Modernism flourished during the years 1914 to 1939. As a movement it was the key point of reference for 20th century architecture, design and art. Modernists had an utopian desire to create a better world, frequently combined with social and political beliefs that design and art could transform society. The range of objects illustrated – including painting, sculpture, film, photography, prints and collage as well as architecture, interiors, furniture, manufactured products, graphic and fashion design – reflect the period’s emphasis on the unity of the arts and the key role of the fine arts in shaping contemporary visual culture. Europe and America take centre stage but the reach of Modernism is demonstrated by selected works from around the world, including Russia, Palestine and Japan.

Summary:
Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in "The Arts & Crafts Cabin". In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, "The Arts & Crafts Cabin" uses spectacular colour photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today.
