Summary:

Summary:
Interior architecture today operates at the intersection between physical and mediated spaces, such as those of mass communications, digital platforms or visual arts. Considering any form of representation as potentially architectural, from writing to photography, drawing to cinema, Javier Fernández Contreras traces the origins of this process of hybridisation between space and media back to the Renaissance and addresses the role of interiors as an experimental laboratory of late modernity. Combining historic scholarship with bold hypotheses, his essay explores contemporary interiors as platforms of ‘expanded media’, examining their belonging to different places and temporalities, whether physical or virtual, close or distant, ultimately reasserting the role of interior architecture in the construction of contemporaneity.

Summary:
This book is about a way of building that for centuries dominated the making of monumental architecture – yet now not only is it lost as practice, but knowledge of its very existence is consigned to oblivion. Trachtenberg rewrites the history of medieval and Renaissance architecture in Italy and recasts the turn to modernity in new terms, those of temporality and its role in architectural theory and practice. Recovering this lost element of the deep architectural past allows us also to see the present in a new way: that temporality is not any neutral or secondary factor in modern architecture culture, but an epistemic condition that silently affects all production and experience of the built environment.

Summary:
Scolari's illustrated studies show that illusionistic perspective is not the only, or even the best, representation of objects in history; parallel projection, for example, preserves in scale the actual measurements of objects it represents, avoiding the distortions of one-point perspective. Scolari analyzes the use of nonperspectival representations in pre-Renaissance images of machines and military hardware, architectural models and drawings, and illustrations of geometrical solids. He challenges Panofsky's theory of Pompeiian perspective and explains the difficulties encountered by the Chinese when they viewed Jesuit missionaries' perspectival religious images. Scolari demonstrates the diversity of representational forms devised through the centuries, and shows how each one reveals something that is lacking in the others.

Summary:
Colorful and humorous, and utilizing simple forms such as cones, cylinders and cubes, Rossi's graphic output extends his vision of the city as a unified entity composed of consistent rather than unconnected structures. Rossi's architectural vocabulary synthesized medieval and Renaissance precedents (most famously in his floating theatre created for the 1979 Venice Biennale) in a manner that led him to be tagged a postmodernist in the 80s, especially in the US where he taught for many years at Yale and Cornell, and erected buildings in Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas. As the work of Rossi and his generation receives renewed critical attention, this volume celebrates one of the postwar era's leading architectural imaginations.

Summary:
Set amid the imperial extravagances of the American Renaissance to the Roaring Twenties (1890-1935), an era redolent with the well-publicized achievements of such famed designers as Stanford White, Richard Morris Hunt, Carrère & Hastings, and John Russell Pope, it astounds one to learn that the one authentic genius among them was a publicity-shy Philadelphian without any kind of social connections whose formal education did not extend beyond the 10th grade. Yet the supremacy of Horace Trumbauer in the field of classically-inspired residential design is acknowledged by such diverse voices as art connoisseur Joseph Duveen, modernist icon Philip Johnson, and author Aldous Huxley. "American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer," will place the achievements of this master creator of the American Great House before a wider and more discerning public. Working with clients whose names comprise a veritable who's who of America's industrial and financial moguls, Trumbauer's prodigious body of work graced both the exclusive enclaves of Newport, Rhode Island, Long Island, Philadelphia's Main Line and Elkins Park, and the vaunted precincts of New York's Fifth Avenue and Washington DC's Embassy Row. Allied with the finest landscape designers and interior decorators of his time, Trumbauer's elegant mansions represent the ultimate expression of a nation's ambition for grandeur and supremacy since those of the Italian Renaissance. Devoid of any wish for personal fame or artistic recognition, he hoped that his work would ultimately speak for itself. As "American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer" demonstrates, it most certainly and eloquently does. In this first monograph on Horace Trumbauer, American Splendor introduces the genius of this American master architect to the world.
