A magic square is a grid of numbers, arranged in such a way that the sum along any row, column, or corner to corner diagonal is the same. Magic squares are found throughout antiquity and by the time they had arrived in Renaissance Europe, by way of the translation of Arabic magical texts, 7 magic squares were known, starting with a 3x3 and ending with a 9x9 square. Due to their numerical balance, these squares were seen as reflective of an inherent balance in the cosmos, and were linked to the 7 known planetary bodies of the time: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon. Through the magic of the numbers in each square, radiating forces associated with each planet could be accessed and directed by way of a talismanic sigil.

Summary:
The only full treatise on architecture and its related arts to survive from classical antiquity, the "Architectura libri decem" ("Ten Books of Architecture") is the single most important work of architectural history in the Western world, having shaped humanist architecture and the image of the architect from the Renaissance to the present. Extremely influential in the formation of the medieval and modern concept of a broad liberal arts education as the basis for responsible professionals, this work is remarkable also because over half of its content deals with aspects of Hellenistic art, science, and technology, music theory, law, artillery, siege machinery, proportion and philosophy, among other topics. This new, critical edition of Vitruvius' "Ten Books of Architecture" is the first to be published for an English-language audience in more than half a century.

Summary:
In the period following World War II, eminent Mexican architects such as Juan O’Gorman and Luis Barragán pioneered the adaptation of an international narrative in housing design to their own cultural environment. Seven decades on, Mexican architecture, and housing design in particular, is experiencing a renaissance and gaining unparalleled international attention owing to the ideas and ambitions of a new generation of architects. Mexico’s architects are making a strong contribution to a global discourse grounded in local economic and cultural issues, as well as environmental concerns. This volume features twenty-two exceptional housing projects in Mexico from the last ten years. Featuring a series of conversations among architects, developers, and researchers, the book illuminates the local context for these projects, highlighting their designers’ new ideas and their contribution to reimagining housing typologies.

Summary:
"The architectural project" considers the practice of architectural design as it has developed during the last two centuries. In this challenging interpretation of design education and its effect on design process and products, Argentinean scholar Alfonso Corona-Martínez emphasizes the distinction between an architectural project, created in the architect's mind and materialized as a set of drawings on paper, and the realized three-dimensional building. Corona-Martínez demonstrates how representation plays a substantial role in determining both the notion and the character of architecture, and he traces this relationship from the Renaissance into the Modern era, giving detailed considerations of Functionalism and Typology. His argument clarifies the continuity in the practice of design method through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a continuity that has been obscured by the emphasis on changing goals instead of design procedures.

Summary:
"Architecture of the nineteenth century", issued in the "History of world Architecture" series, offers a complete survey of European architecture during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, examining in particular the influence of the cultural trends of the period on the architects’ works. The first section of the book deals with the history of eighteenth-century architecture in France and England, countries where Cartesian-school philosophical speculation and Anglo-Saxon philosophical empiricism wielded a determining influence. After analysing the developments of the classical tradition and its propagation throughout Europe, the book studies in depth the history of architectural movements, comprising neo-classicism, neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic architecture. The outstanding, forerunning personalities of this brilliant artistic period who, in the course of the nineteenth century, offered fecund theoretic and stylistic contributions, include Gottfried Semper, John Ruskin and Eugène Viollet-le Duc.

Summary:
In this book, Anthony Vidler examines the work of four historians of architectural modernism and the ways in which their histories were constructed as more or less overt programs for the theory and practice of design in a contemporary context. Vidler looks at the historical approaches of Emil Kaufmann, Colin Rowe, Reyner Banham, and Manfredo Tafuri, and the specific versions of modernism advanced by their historical narratives. Vidler shows that the modernism conceived by Kaufmann was, like the late Enlightenment projects he revered, one of pure, geometrical forms and elemental composition; that of Rowe saw mannerist ambiguity and complexity in contemporary design; Banham's modernism took its cue from the aspirations of the futurists; and the "Renaissance modernism" of Tafuri found its source in the division between the technical experimentation of Brunelleschi and the cultural nostalgia of Alberti.
