The sequence that follows, covering almost seventy years, encompasses a wide range of styles, forms, and approaches as it traces the evolution of one of the most important voices in contemporary photography. It includes journeys to the USA, Russia, Turkey, and Portugal, and studies of the works of architects including Carlo Scarpa, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. Consistently, though, it returns to the modest agricultural landscapes where Guidi was born and still lives and works today, among which he has developed the revelatory visual language for which he is celebrated as a modern master.

They cultivated a fondness for the natural world around them, and in the decades that followed, they became sensitized to potential threats. Sellers shows how the philosophy, science, and emotions that catalyzed the environmental movement sprang directly from suburbanites' lives and their ideas about nature, as well as the unique ecology of the neighborhoods in which they dwelt. Sellers focuses on the spreading edges of New York and Los Angeles over the middle of the twentieth century to create an intimate portrait of what it was like to live amid suburban nature. This diary is dotted with a pastiche of rants about the extreme cold and utter loneliness, notes on Herzog's films and travels, poetic descriptions of the snowy countryside, and personal philosophizing. What is most remarkable is that the reading of the book is in continuity with the experience of watching his films; it's as if, through this walk, we witness the process in which images are born. She paints with an indefatigable passion for storytelling, spreading the paint thickly with broad, sweeping gestures, or dryly and sparsely, across the canvas. Glimmering beauty and dark maelstroms of doom are sampled with elements from myths, films and dreams, the absurd and the realistic, in the same picture. Her early works feature children in vast landscapes, echoing her own childhood in northern Sweden. The figures are set, each separately, in forests, by lakes, in the countryside. This rural setting later gives way to the interiors of the art world – cluttered framers’ workshops, libraries and elegant salons with finely ornamented objects. More recently, these rooms have opened up towards new worlds, where dream and reality seem to be careening. Whatever motifs she paints, the atmosphere appears to be fairly constant: a form of serenity in between finding and forgetting. The titles underline the ambiguity, explaining nothing but running parallel with the paintings.

The book collects five vacation homes in Sweden designed by Stockholm-based architect Mikael Bergquist. Realized over more than two decades, they are all located in the Swedish countryside and rooted in the Nordic tradition of timber construction and the simplicity and economy of Sweden’s historic farm buildings. Bergquist’s great care for detail and choice of materials characterize these houses. They are united also by a close relationship to the surrounding nature, the experience of which is enhanced by the concepts of movement and the placement of passages between the outside and inside. The houses are documented with photographs as well as with plans and sections. In his supplementary essay, Bergquist writes about the special position of working as an architect on the periphery of Europe. He draws a picture of Swedish architecture that is marked by what he calls "fruitful misunderstandings" of current movements, and in which poverty of the rural population has been a major factor in the evolution of the design and construction of dwellings.
