Summary:
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the fabric works from the last two decades in the career of artist Louise Bourgeois. This body of work began when the artist started incorporating clothes from all stages of her life into her art, and later expanded to include a range of other textiles such as bed linen, handkerchiefs, tapestry, and needlepoint. The fabric works mine the themes of identity and sexuality, trauma and memory, guilt and reparation, and serve as metaphors for emotional and psychological states. The catalogue – which accompanies the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, and the Gropius Bau, Berlin – features works from numerous series, including the monumental Cell installations, figurative sculptures, and abstract drawings.

Summary:
Around 1800, one of the most influential architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged—that of built spaces as technical devices. Climate, morality, and comfort are the three main themes of this study, and each is vividly examined in separate chapters through synchronous comparison and with the help of examples. The emergence of corresponding metaphors, knowledge, and construction forms is traced over a period of about 70 years. The author focuses particularly on the operative dimension of architecture. Thus, the book provides a historical perspective on a key topic for the future of architecture. The book is aimed at readers interested in architecture, technology or the cultural history of building and living.

The book takes the reader on an intellectual adventure through a carefully curated selection of 120 places that can be understood as metaphors of contemporary global culture. Spread across all seven continents, from the depths of the ocean to outer space, these places are divided into six chapters: Paradises, Utopias, Machines, Monsters, Ruins, and Instruments. The spectrum ranges from Steve Jobs' Apple Park in California to a national park in Costa Rica, a small field station for the protection of wild orangutans in Borneo, the Great Green Wall in Central Africa, the Trump resort Mar-a-Lago, to the border wall between Israel and Palestine. This book is a grand tour of the most pertinent places in the world today.

Summary:
At the beginning of the economic crisis in 2007, housing became a central commodity in the short-circuit system of mortgages granted to private individuals and businesses. In the aftermath of the crisis, and in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, housing—as a right, in its most radical form—re-emerged due to local housing, migration, and health emergencies. In light of an eclipse of a general discourse on housing, a new secular and international ethics arose, both foreign and superior to nation states. This book returns to a broader notion of housing: using metaphors of sanitary and salvific reinstatement, it retrieves case studies from the 1950s for re-conceptualizing the housing question in contemporary architecture and visual arts.

Summary:
This collection of essays by architect Mario Gooden investigates the construction of African American identity and representation through the medium of architecture. These five texts move between history, theory, and criticism to explore a discourse of critical spatial practice engaged in the constant reshaping of the African Diaspora. African American cultural institutions designed and constructed in recent years often rely on cultural stereotypes, metaphors, and clichés to communicate significance, demonstrating "Africanisms" through form and symbolism?but there is a far richer and more complex heritage to be explored. Presented here is a series of questions that interrogate and illuminate other narratives of "African American architecture," and reveal compelling ways of translating the philosophical idea of the African Diaspora's experience into space.

Summary:
Born in 1944, Christian Hauvette, studied under the philosopher Roland Barthes before going on to train as an architect. Since 1980 he has headed his own office in Paris. Today, Hauvette is one of France’s leading architects. His architecture is characterised by a clear, constructive purpose which is at the same time highly expressive. Jean Prouvé’s theories are much in evidence in his work. This monograph provides an in-depth overview on the buildings and projects of the 90s, including the School of Waters and Forests in Clermont-Ferrand and his sensational headquarters of the Caisse Française de Développement in Paris, analysing the essential characteristics of Hauvette’s creativity.
