Summary:
Born out of the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) was one of the most compelling processes in 20th-century architecture. A pioneering experiment in Europe, it set up technical teams led by architects who, in collaboration with the local population, tried to address the urgent housing needs of communities across the nation. The teams were reinventing architectural practice, from surveying living conditions to monitoring land expropriation, designing projects with the residents directly. This volume includes new essays along with historic texts, an interview with some of the major figures involved, and extensive project documentation. An exhibition by the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, The SAAL Process will be presented at the CCA in Spring 2015.

Summary:
After the Second World War, a divided Europe was much affected by a period of reconstruction. This was influenced by the different political systems – in the socialist East and in the capitalist West, the focus was on cohesion in society and its cultural and architectural expression. In parallel to the rapidly progressing industrialization of the building industry, debates on the humanization of the built environment were led on both sides with great intensity. The volume shows how, on the back of existentialism, new monumentality, and socialist realism, quite similar concepts and strategies were developed in order to find answers to questions relating to adequate structures for new forms of community and identity.

Summary:
The discipline of architecture depends on the transmission in space and time of accumulated experiences, concepts, rules, and models. From the invention of the alphabet to the development of ASCII code for electronic communication, the process of recording and transmitting this body of knowledge has reflected the dominant information technologies of each period. In this book Mario Carpo discusses the communications media used by Western architects, from classical antiquity to modern classicism, showing how each medium related to specific forms of architectural thinking. Carpo highlights the significance of the invention of movable type and mechanically reproduced images. He argues that Renaissance architectural theory, particularly the system of the five architectural orders, was consciously developed in response to the formats and potential of the new printed media. Carpo contrasts architecture in the age of printing with what preceded it: Vitruvian theory and the manuscript format, oral transmission in the Middle Ages, and the fifteenth-century transition from script to print. He also suggests that the basic principles of "typographic" architecture thrived in the Western world as long as print remained our main information technology. The shift from printed to digital representations, he points out, will again alter the course of architecture.

Summary:
Ever since Slovenia joined the European Union in 2004, Slovenian architecture has attracted considerable interest worldwide. The internationally recognized projects of recent years are distinguished in particular by their innovativeness and self-assured originality. School construction, which has been a priority in Slovenia for decades, has acquired special significance as a result of the country's economic upswing. The school buildings presented in the publication "Contemporary School Architecture in Slovenia" were all constructed after 1991, following the establishment of the Republic of Slovenia. In addition to the introduction by the two authors Maja Ivanic and Spela Kuhar, the book includes interviews on the subject with 8 architects. The historical perspective is conveyed in 6 essays, and the 35 documented projects are presented in pictures, diagrams and textual descriptions.
