Summary:
The product of an international collective of artists, architects and writers who create collaborative projects and publications, this third edition of Surface Tension's Supplement series documents three years of artistic research, site-specific work and location-based practices in Curitiba, Brazil--providing an in-depth exploration of the city's economically marginal favela dwellers, who venture throughout the public spaces of Curitiba in search of recyclable materials. Documentation and texts elaborate on the cultural and political issues that come to light through various uses of public space. Originally developed as a collaborative installation between international and local artists--including Ken Ehrlich, Brandon LaBelle, Octávio Camargo and Guilherme Soares--exhibited at Curitiba's Ybakatu Gallery, this publication raises pertinent questions about the consequences of cross-cultural and site-specific collaboration and proffers an experimental approach toward political inquiry and intermedia practice.

New perspectives on sound have generated a wave of scholarship in musicology, cultural studies, and the social sciences. But the equally important rise of sound in the arts since 1960 has so far been sparsely documented. This volume is the first sourcebook to provide, through original critical writings and artists’ statements, a genealogy of sonic pathways into the arts, philosophical reflections on the meanings of noise and silence, dialogues between art and music, investigations of the role of listening and acoustic space, and a comprehensive survey of sound works by international artists from the avant-garde era to the present.

Summary:
Topotek 1 is one of Germany's internationally best-known landscape architecture firms. Rosemarie Trockel has made a name for herself through highly unconventional works that have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, at documenta Kassel, the Venice Biennale, and elsewhere. The new and extremely playful park in Munich is the result of a collaboration between them. It covers a three-hundred-meter section of railroad tracks and creates urgently needed open space for the neighborhood of Theresienhohe. In addition to the design, technically demanding questions like the approach to statics, acoustics, and traffic safety also needed to be solved. This monograph examines the new park design in a number of essays and documents the design and production process.

Summary:
"Modern Chinese architecture: 180 years" tells the dramatic story of the transformation of Chinese architecture from a predominantly modular, timber-frame, single-story building system with ceramic tile roofs of anonymous, local craftsmen to skyscrapers designed by internationally acclaimed architects, from temple markets and itinerant peddlers to megamalls, and from open air stages to auditoriums and stadiums with cutting-edge acoustics. The architectural transformation occurs as China transforms from a dynasty ruled by emperors to a republic to a people’s republic, from a country in which fewer than half the male population, and perhaps 10 percent of the female population could read to at least 97% literacy, and from a population that was fewer than 5 percent to more than 60 percent urban.

Summary:
A room’s acoustic character seems at once the most technical and the most mystical of concerns. Since the early Enlightenment, European architects have systematically endeavored to represent and control the propagation of sound in large interior spaces. Their work has been informed by the science of sound but has also been entangled with debates on style, visualization techniques, performance practices, and the expansion of the listening public. Echo’s Chambers explores how architectural experimentation from the seventeenth through the mid-twentieth centuries laid the groundwork for concepts of acoustic space that are widely embraced in contemporary culture. It focuses on the role of echo and reverberation in the architecture of Pierre Patte, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, Carl Ferdinand Langhans, and Le Corbusier, as well as the influential acoustic ideas of Athanasius Kircher, Richard Wagner, and Marshall McLuhan. Drawing on interdisciplinary theories of media and auditory culture, Joseph L. Clarke reveals how architecture has impacted the ways we continue to listen to, talk about, and creatively manipulate sound in the physical environment.

Summary:
From the stainless steel curves of its striking exterior to the state-of-the-art acoustics of the hardwood-paneled main auditorium, Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, new home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will be one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world. Opening in fall 2003, the hall is destined to be a new architectural landmark, generating as much excitement as Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which its design predates. This book, which includes an introduction by Gehry, traces the history of the hall from its inception through the architect selection process, construction, and completion of the building, which is recorded by architectural photographer Grant Mudford. Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, recounts his first impressions of Gehry and the models for the new building in an essay that also defines what makes a great orchestra and a great concert hall.

Summary:
Log 33 delivers emerging currents and renewed interests in architectural thought. It includes a thorough examination of object-oriented philosophy: two essays offering contrasting positions on its value for the architectural discipline as well as a conversation between philosopher Graham Harman and architects Todd Gannon, David Ruy, and Tom Wiscombe. Objects are invoked throughout the issue in myriad other ways – in essays on the postcritical legacy, architecture and objecthood, shape and character, history and machines – highlighting the currency and multivalence of the term object in the discourse today. Log 33 also presents Wolfgang Schivelbusch’s “World Machines,” the new preface to his recently republished book The Railway Journey (plus an introduction to his work by Sanford Kwinter) as well as critical commentary on architectural events from around the world, essays on urban noise and architectural acoustics, new explorations of the architect’s hand in drawing, and more.
