Summary:
Telling the story of one of the most important gardens in Europe, created by the internationally celebrated architectural critic and designer Charles Jencks and his late wife, the landscape architect and author Maggie Keswick, this book looks at The Garden of Cosmic Speculation. It is a landscape that celebrates the new sciences of complexity and chaos theory and consists of a series of metaphors exploring the origins, the destiny and the substance of the Universe. The garden is full of ideas, associations, games and memories; Jencks weaves his personal account of the garden's creation into an investigation into the revelations of recent science, using landscape and design to shed light on the way we can now conceive of the Universe. This book is illustrated with year-round photography

Summary:
The making of shadows is an act as old as architecture itself. From the gloom of the medieval hearth through to the masterworks of modernism, shadows have been an essential yet neglected presence in architectural history. "Shadow-Makers" tells for the first time the history of shadows in architecture. It weaves together a rich narrative – combining close readings of significant buildings both ancient and modern with architectural theory and art history – to reveal the key places and moments where shadows shaped architecture in distinctive and dynamic ways. It shows how shadows are used as an architectural instrument of form, composition, and visual effect, while also exploring the deeper cultural context – tracing differing conceptions of their meaning and symbolism, whether as places of refuge, devotion, terror, occult practice, sublime experience or as metaphors of the unconscious.

Summary:
"I asked architects to send me important images that show the basis of their work. Images that are in their head when they think. Images that show the origin of their architecture. In this book we find 44 individual 'musées imaginaires'. The most unique architects living today each present up to ten images to explain the autobiographical roots of their oeuvre. The images are explanations, metaphors, foundations, memories and intentions. They are poetic and philosophical avowals. They reveal a personal perspective on thoughts. They show the roots of architecture and expectations concerning projects. Conscious and unconscious. The biographies are written by the architects themselves. The images are small, legible and interpretable as icons. As individual collections, they present a personal view of an individual world, while as a whole they provide a universal view of the perceptible origin of contemporary architecture." – Valerio Olgiati

Summary:
Originally released as a feature film in 1993, the year before the acclaimed artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman’s death due to an AIDS-related illness, Blue is a daring and powerful work of art. The film and its script, as reproduced in this volume, serve as an impassioned response to the lack of political engagement with the AIDS crisis. Jarman’s Blue moves through myriad scenes, some banal, others fantastical. Stories of quotidian life––getting coffee, reading the newspaper, and walking down the sidewalk––escalate to visions of Marco Polo, the Taj Mahal, or blue fighting yellow. Facing death and a cascade of pills, Jarman presents his illness in delirium and metaphors. He contemplates the physicality of emotions in lyrical prose as he grounds this story in the constant return to Blue—a color, a feeling, a funk. Michael Charlesworth’s compelling introduction brings Blue into conversation with Jarman’s visual paintings.

Summary:
10x10 is an account of 10 years of Emiliano Ponzi’s work, spent designing ideas whilst comfortably seated in a 10x10 sq m room in Milan - the illustrator’s home and office. Four walls, a white screen and a window, the only means of escape through which the artist’s images, like carrier pigeons, fly away to editors and art directors. Some of these modern visual metaphors are lost in space, while others return to the window-sill, bringing welcome and, sometimes, unwelcome replies. With an introduction by Nicholas Blechman (art director of the New York Times Book Review), this publication brings us a collection of these images with four different cover choices and a selection of e-mails, sent as Emiliano Ponzi received them. Some amusing, some scathing, but all anonymous. Vividly illustrated for the international press and advertising companies, Ponzi’s sharp accounts record the joys and sorrows of his captivating profession.

Summary:
"Vitruvius’s De architectura" is the only major work on architecture to survive from classical antiquity, and until the eighteenth century it was the text to which all other architectural treatises referred. While European classicists have focused on the factual truth of the text itself, English-speaking architects and architectural theorists have viewed it as a timeless source of valuable metaphors. Departing from both perspectives, Indra Kagis McEwen examines the work’s meaning and significance in its own time. Vitruvius dedicated De architectura to his patron Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, whose rise to power inspired its composition near the end of the first century B.C. McEwen argues that the imperial project of world dominion shaped Vitruvius’s purpose in writing what he calls "the whole body of architecture." Specifically, Vitruvius’s aim was to present his discipline as the means for making the emperor’s body congruent with the imagined body of the world he would rule.

Summary:
Accattone #4 draws on the idea of collection to explore mythical methods and visual ethnographies in contemporary practices, with an interest in the compression, into a single artefact, of long periods of history, power relations, memories and everyday experience. It features anthropology museums, underground data centres and minor collections performed in private houses, double-sided masks and architectural strata in a floor slab or a facade, totemic mock-ups on a 1:1 scale and metaphors in the desert. Invited contributions include words and documents by Frida Escobedo, photos by Kristien Daem, Philippe Braquenier and Stefano Graziani, a return on an installation by Ištvan Išt Huzjan with Sam Steverlynck, Frank Tuytschaever and Jurgen Vergotte, our visit to Pierre Leguillon’s Museum of Mistakes and ARU’s visit to an house by Peter Märkli, an interview with 51N4E, photos of Camille Henrot’s installation The Pale Fox, essays by Cédric Libert and Freek Persyn, models and mock-ups by Bruther, XDGA, CAB, Barthélémy-Griño, Michel Desvigne.
