Description:
The urban and public architecture of Hubert Rohault de Fleury is insightful concerning both the stylistic directions of utilitarian architecture in France and the structure and role of the government architectural services (1) in the Empire and the Restoration. The drawings in the CCA collection depict built and unbuilt projects undertaken in the context of Hubert's positions in the government architectural services as well as private commissions. Hubert's principal official positions related to three branches of the French government: the Préfecture de la police, the Conseil général des hospices and the Conseil des Bâtiments Civils, a "division" of the Ministère de l'interieur. Hubert's work for the Préfecture de la police (which was also responsible for the gendarmerie and the sapeurs-pompiers barracks) is represented in the CCA collection by projects for four gendarmerie barracks (1821-1830) and alterations to the Préfecture de la Police (1833 ?) and nearby prison in Paris (1819)(DR1974:0002:016:001-070 / DR1974:0002:011:001-089 and DR1974:0002: 015:001-070). The drawings in these albums emphasize the planning (or re-arrangement) of the interior spaces. The album for the Préfecture de la police also includes record drawings for prisons in England and France as background material for Hubert's work and/or related to reports for the Conseil des Bâtiments Civils, which had an active role in the design of prisons throughout France during the early years of the nineteenth century (2). Although the CCA collection has no drawings directly related to Hubert's position as the architecte des hospices (3), drawings and prints are included for his earlier ideal hospitals (ca. 1810) (DR1974:0002:008:001-077). These projects continue the late 17th and 18th century tradition of monumental geometrically laid-out ideal hospitals. This album also contains prints and drawings of medical buildings by other architects (probably reference material), and drawings of Hubert's unexecuted proposal for the re-development of the École de médecine (Paris) and the surrounding buildings and urban spaces. Hubert was the architecte de l'École de medicine (4); a position that probably related to his work for the Ministère d'Interieur, which would have been responsible for this building. In general, Hubert's role and responsibilities within the Ministère de l'interieur and the associated Conseil de Bâtiment Civils (especially prior to his appointment to the position of inspecteur gènèral in 1830) are the least clear of his government positions. In addition to the École de medicine album, two other albums contain projects relating to the Ministère de l'Interieur: two proposals for Place Louis XV commissioned by the Ministre de l'interieur, Duc Decazes in 1821 (DR1974:0002:037:001-031), and drawings for the conversion or renovation of several Parisian hôtel particuliers (probably between 1810 and ca. 1820) including those used by the Ministère de l'interieur, Ministère de la Guerre and the Ministère des affaires étrangères (DR1974:0002;011:001-089). On other government commission of significance is represented in the CCA collection. In 1819, Hubert Rohault de Fleury in collaboration with Etienne Hyppolite Godde was commissioned to direct the restoration of the Thermes de Julien located under the Hôtel de Cluny. The CCA collection includes several letters and drawings, and a report related to this commission (DR1974:0002 :037:001-031). Hubert's private urban projects, mostly commissioned by private entrepreneurs or societies, were concerned with the expansion of the infrastructure of Paris and the surrounding communities as well as, to some extent, larger issues of urban development. One album contains projects dating from between 1819 and 1836 related horses - an essential part of 19th century urban life (5): a stud-farm (Haras de Madrid, Bois de Boulogne), an auction house and an infirmary (Clos St. Charles, Clos d'équarrissage, fôret de Bondy) and three slaughterhouses (Plaine de Grenelle, an unnamed project and La Villete (6))(DR1974:0002:014:001-104). These album also includes developmental studies for a new quartier of Paris - Nouveau Quartier Poissonière (the site of today's 10e arrondissement). A second album (ca. 1825) includes designs for a "maison de blanchisseur", an "entrepot de vins" with adjacent "guingette" and designs for structures at Parc de Clichy - a reservoir, a washhouse and a manège (DR1974:0002:009:001-079) (7). The drawings in these albums are particularly informative regarding the materials, structures and mechanical systems utilized. As with most of his government commissions, for these buildings, Hubert adopted a sparse architectural syntax of pared-down classical motifs and regimented plans grounded in the ideas of Durand and commonly used in utilitarian buildings during the 19th century. File documents a competition entry for a new pier on the Thames in the City of Westminster, London, England. The Westminster pier project consisted of a restaurant with deck and observation tower, a fixed pier or public walkway, a catwalk, various ramps, and a pontoon. Existing conditions drawings and photographs include: a hydrographic plan, site plan, and section of the pier and pier edge; an enlarged contact sheet of photographs of the site and surrounding area; and a photocopy of a photograph of a typical pier boat, possibly used for reference purposes. Conceptual sketches include numerous thumbnail and annotated diagrammatic sketches which explore the functional relationships of the areas encompassed by the project. Design development drawings show sections through river embankments, restaurant and tower structures, walkways, ramps, and catwalks, at high and low tide and at night and during the day. Axonometric drawings show the principal structures, circulation paths, and access and control points. A group of drawings are probably a competition entry set marked by a hole punched in the upper right hand corner. Presentation panels are composed of reproductions of photographs of the existing site with overdrawing and montage which shows Price's project in relationship to the river. Two presentation panels which show the walkway/ramp, pontoon, and restaurant in partial elevation have been coloured with airbrush. Duplicate reprographic copies were made from the original design development drawings, and some are annotated with notes. File also contains clippings about "sub-marine engineering" which are possibly related to this project. Material in this file was produced in 1979. Cedric Price's design includes the layout and detailing for display and holding cases, and possibly renovations for the kitchen, basement storage and bathroom facilities. Price also proposed an unusual front entrance which is flanked on either side by sculptural "tuning forks". There is an existing conditions reference plan of no. 26 and no. 29 South Audley Street. A panel with a reprographic copy of a schematic diagram outlines possible routes to the workplace for the staff. Conceptual and design development drawings include schematic sketches; numerous alternate floor plans; triangular, bulk barrel and zig-zag configurations for display and holding cases; and thumbnail sketches for the "tuning forks" for the entrance. Design development drawings also include: plans for proposals 1 and 2 for the renovations; an enlarged plan for the forecourt and display window showing the entrance, and including a key to storage areas; an axonometric for the entrance interior and an elevation for the principal façade showing the "tuning forks"; and plans, sections, and details for shelves, display counters, and holding cases. This project series documents the design of the Victoria University Hotel in Toronto from 1987-1988. The office identified the project numbers as 18723 and 18725. This project, headed by Bruce Kuwabara, consisted of a proposed nine floor hotel with 22,000 square metres of space. Located at the corner of Charles Street and St. Thomas Streets, the hotel contained a lobby, bar, restaurant, kitchen, and meeting rooms on the ground floor, with a mezzanine for additional meeting rooms directly above it. The other floors were proposed to hold between 274-320 rooms, including a penthouse with its own bar, kitchen and meeting rooms. Three levels of underground parking were also proposed, holding between 183-220 vehicles. The L-shaped building integrated old houses that already existed along Charles Street, into its facade. Houses along St. Thomas Street were to be left as separate buildings, with the L shape wrapping around them. This project was never realized. The project is recorded through drawings and a project model dating from 1986-1990. The drawings include sketches, surveys and area plans, floor plans, elevations, perspectives, sections and details. This project was designed simultaneously with the Victoria University Student Housing across the street (see project subseries AP056.S1.1987.PR06.SS2). These two projects have been arranged in two subseries because their project numbers and the site plans and surveys for each project overlap. The housing project was assigned the project number 19723, the same number as materials for this hotel project. It may be that the architects separated the two projects later on, assigning a second project number, 18725, to this hotel project. These two project subseries should be viewed together.

The majority of drawings for each project are originals and a large part of reprographic copies have annotations. The drawings for each project typically consist of surveys, sketches, plans, sections, elevations, axonometric drawings, details, perspectives, and drawings issued for construction. Some of the drawings are mounted for presentation purposes. A large number of furnishing drawings are also included for interior design projects. Photographs in this series show finished work completed by the firm, the project models, and reproductions of drawings and paintings. The paintings in this series are mostly watercolours used for presentation. The textual records are very sparse in this series and consist of rough notes used to supplement drawings. The periodicals are magazines that highlight the completed projects. The collaborative process around these projects allowed exploring design methods through the usage of digital tools. In discussions with Greg Lynn, Johan Bettum and Kivi Sotamaa have expressed that they had broached Töölö as a landscape and Jyväskylä as a cloud. Particle streaming and Channelling Systems approaches were applied in these projects and further developed in the third phase of the Synthetic Landscape project and its Pavilion. The Synthetic Landscape project also featured usage of polymer composite materials. All records are born-digital, except for one 1995 drawing from the Synthetic Landscape project. Records include CAD models, raster and vector images, textual records and animated renderings from Channelling Systems studies. CAD models and drawings show design process of the projects, and range from the abstract (particle streaming) to very detailed plans (Jyväskylä). They were created using form*Z, Microstation, Alias, 3D Studio, AutoCAD and Rhinoceros. Some files were saved in IGES and DXF formats. Most CAD drawings have been saved as raster images. Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for the Waterfall Building on West 2nd Avenue, near the entrance of Granville Island, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Oberlander worked on this project in 1998-2001 with architect Arthur Erickson and architectural firm Nick Milkovich Architects, who designed the building. The building consists in five separated structures to accomodate studios spaces as well as split-level residences. It also included a courtyard and roof gardens on all five building structures for which Oberlander was responsible of the design. The courtyard, formed by in the roof of the underground parking space, consists "a simple tapestry of pavers, ground cover, trees and a small reflecting basin [...]." [1] The roofs garden included planting of white roses at the edge of the building and ornemental grass. The rooftops serve as communal patio for the residents and was accesible to the public. The project was completed in 2001. The Waterfall Building was the last project Oberlander realized in collaboration with Arthur Erickson. The project series includes sketches, design development drawings, including planting plans for the courtyard and the rooftops, working drawings, such as landscape plans for the courtyard and planting plans. Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for the Waterfall Building on West 2nd Avenue, near the entrance of Granville Island, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Oberlander worked on this project in 1998-2001 with architect Arthur Erickson and architectural firm Nick Milkovich Architects, who designed the building. The building consists in five separated structures to accomodate studios spaces as well as split-level residences. It also included a courtyard and roof gardens on all five building structures for which Oberlander was responsible of the design. The courtyard, formed by in the roof of the underground parking space, consists "a simple tapestry of pavers, ground cover, trees and a small reflecting basin [...]." [1] The roofs garden included planting of white roses at the edge of the building and ornemental grass. The rooftops serve as communal patio for the residents and was accesible to the public. The project was completed in 2001. The Waterfall Building was the last project Oberlander realized in collaboration with Arthur Erickson. The project series includes sketches, design development drawings, including planting plans for the courtyard and the rooftops, working drawings, such as landscape plans for the courtyard and planting plans. File documents an executed project for the Falk House, Hardwick, Vermont. This single-family dwelling for Mr. and Mrs. Richard Falk, was constructed on a hilltop near Hardwick, Vermont. Material in this file was produced in 1969 and 1970. Among the 103 conceptual sketches by Eisenman (DR1994:0130:001-103) are 36 large format conceptual drawings on tracing paper (DR1994:0130:068-103). Early ground and second floor plans for the house by Eisenman are probably presentation drawings, since they include a description of the functions of the rooms and furniture layouts (DR1994:0130:196-197). All of the second floor rooms have skylights, for which there are numerous design development details (DR1994:0130:207-220). Original working drawings include construction details (DR1994:0130:409-440). Among the numerous drawings for publication is a proposal for a cover of Casabella magazine (DR1994:0130:301). File contains conceptual drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, and axonometrics - many black felt-tip pen and/or graphite on yellow tracing paper and some black felt-tip pen on wove paper; and a sketchbook - many coloured pencil and/or black felt-tip pen on tracing vellum. This project series documents interior design for Main Street of Hasbro Headquarters in Pawtucket, Rhode Island from 1989-1991. The office identified the project number as 8902. This project consisted of the interiors of the company's headquarters for an area of the building known as Main Street. This was the first in a series of projects that the firm would complete for the headquarters. The 300,000 square foot building was predominantly one-storey and located on the block between Saratoga, Grand, London and Newport Avenues. The three projects were known as Main Street, Phase 2A and Phase 2B. Phase 1 was completed in 1986 by Barton Myers Associates with Shirley Blumberg as partner-in-charge. These subsequent projects by KPMB were also headed by Shirley Blumberg and continued the initial style she had established in Phase 1. These projects saw the conversion of a historic brick and masonry mill into the company's new offices. The office structure was inspired by the layout of a Greek town, with a main street running through it. Main Street was a wide corridor which spanned the length of the building, acting as a central artery for activity. The corridor was flooded with natural light from the original saw tooth skylights on the ceiling and lantern-like offices lined the sides. Small rooms were positioned in the corridor, including the main conference room with a large curved wall, a reception area and two smaller conference rooms. Maple screens, translucent glass and steel were the prominent materials used for Main Street. The project is recorded through drawings dating from 1987-1988. These are mostly original drawings and include sketches, plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, details, and furniture drawings. Many of the plans focus on the design of the executive bathroom.

This project, known as Phase 3, built upon two other major expansion projects to the art gallery, Phase I and Phase II, that were completed by the architecture firm Parkin Architects Planners in the 1970s. Phase 3 was the winning entry for a limited competition won by KPMB, with Thomas Payne as partner-in-charge, in joint venture with the firm of Barton Myers Inc. This project consisted of 100,000 square feet of additions to the building including a prints and drawings study centre, a reference library and administrative offices in the southwest corner and new vaulted galleries, a tower and pyramidal arrival hall along Dundas Street. The Dundas Street elevation was transformed by these additions and brick facades were added. A new double height sculpture atrium, connected to the Victorian Grange mansion, was also added. This project also included 190,000 square feet of renovations to the existing building including changes to galleries, circulation, vaults, staff areas, the restaurant, bookstore and volunteer shop. The goal of these changes was to create a more coherent design between old and new parts of the building and to reinforce the role of art galleries in contemporary life by increasing the scale of the building and creating new spaces for interaction and participation. This project won the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 1988. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and accompanying notes dating from 1986-1992.
