A little island inhabited by fishermen, the sun, the waves. The little boats quietly fish the high seas, but one day a big boat comes to steal all the fishes to the fishermen. The poor fishermen are desperate, till a frightening storm will abandon a big, big fish on the beach: onec more the nature has won... Aoi Huber-Kono writes and draws a tender and fascinating story, where the soft and winding stroke and non-conventional use of colours create a mysterious and bewitching atmosphere. The creative make-up by Max Huber, inspired by calligrammes, follows the waves’ rythm, the spaces and moves suggested by drawings, and generates emotions in the reader. “Il grande pesce”, published for the first time in 1968, it’s a book that continues to talk and touch contemporary children and adults.

Summary:
Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koohaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas’ thinking on preservation, including his practice’s entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas’ readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a retroactive manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA’s work from within the discipline of preservation. This is the first book in the new GSAPP Transcripts series.

Sophie Calle: Rachel Monique

Summary:
“She was successively called Rachel, Monique, Szyndler, Calle, Pagliero, Gonthier, Sindler. My mother liked people to talk about her. Her life did not appear in my work, and that annoyed her. When I set up my camera at the foot of the bed in which she lay dying – fearing that she would pass away in my absence, whereas I wanted to be present and hear her last words – she(...)

Summary:
“She was successively called Rachel, Monique, Szyndler, Calle, Pagliero, Gonthier, Sindler. My mother liked people to talk about her. Her life did not appear in my work, and that annoyed her. When I set up my camera at the foot of the bed in which she lay dying – fearing that she would pass away in my absence, whereas I wanted to be present and hear her last words – she exclaimed: ‘Finally.’”Sophie Calle describes Monique through extracts from personal notebooks and photographs from family albums, and presents her installation created at the Palais de Tokyo in homage to her mother, who died in 2007. This book was above all designed as an authentic art object, in collaboration with the artist. The cover text is embroidered to create a precious object, and all of the texts relating to the installation are embossed so as to evoke the texture of certain works by Sophie Calle. It is a highly personal and moving book, while at the same time offering thoughts on death that all of us can relate to.

Summary:
This book brings together the surviving texts of the 113 talks on art and architecture that we know of, given by the art historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner on radio and television between 1945--1977. It includes the seven texts of the 1955 Reith Lectures in their original broadcast form, as well as lectures that Pevsner gave in German (for the BBC in London and RIAS in Berlin) and on the radio in New Zealand. These talks are important as an example of the attempt by the BBC in particular to provide intellectual programming for the mass population. The talks are important for what they reveal about changing tastes in the treatment of the arts as a broadcast topic, as well as offering a case study of the development of one particular historian's approach to a subject that was gaining ground in universities as a direct result of his popularisation of it.

Summary:
Public spaces — where people from all walks of life play, work, meet, talk, read, think, debate, and protest — are vital to a healthy civic life. And, as the eminent scholar of public space Setha Low argues in this book, even fleeting moments of visibility and encounter in these spaces tend to foster a broader worldview and our willingness to accept difference. Yet we are losing public spaces to accelerated urban development and the belief that public spaces are expendable. Low explores why public spaces matter today, how they are at risk, and what we can do about protecting these essential places that support our everyday lives. Finally, she shows how we can work to promote public space protection and expansion at both the grassroots and global levels. Throughout, she focuses on real public spaces and the people who use them in cities and regions across the Americas, from New Jersey to Costa Rica

Summary:
Feldman is now widely recognized, alongside John Cage and Edgard Varèse, as one of the foremost American composers of the twentieth century. Despite his reputation, he remains poorly represented in published literature. Feldman loved to talk. This lifelong passion is demonstrated in the many interviews and lectures Morton Feldman gave about his life and work. Over the past seven years, editor Chris Villars has collected and published many of Feldman’s interviews online, a selection of which is now available for the first time in this book. The book is certainly an important addition to the literature of Feldman. Morton Feldman says can also be enjoyed for the pleasure that Feldman’s words offer, and for the illumination that they give to anyone who is making work in art or design. Morton Feldman says features 21 interviews and notes on conversations spanning 23 years of Feldman’s life, including conversations with Gavin Bryars, Kevin Volans, and Walter Zimmermann, as well as transcriptions of four Feldman’s lectures, held in Toronto (1982), Johannesburg (1983), and Darmstadt (1984). The publication also contains an introduction by the editor and the first English translation of Sebastian Claren’s biographical notes (originally published in Neither: Die Musik Morton Feldmans). A key element in the book is the photographs from Feldman’s life, which provide a rich accompaniment to the text.
