Summary:
Building a skyscraper requires more than steel and concrete—it takes a wide array of people, each with their particular skills. In Autobiography of a Skyscraper, legendary developer Francis Greenburger offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the construction of Chicago's 1000M tower, describing the way almost 1,000 people—from concrete workers to concierges, architects to investors—transformed an empty lot into a 74-story landmark. "Real estate isn't about property; it's about people," Greenburger reflects in this book that, throughout, underscores his point. This is the story of an Italian immigrant who bet his family's entire inheritance on a hole in the ground; of window installers dancing on narrow ledges 800 feet above Michigan Avenue; of a chief concierge managing a community of 700 residents across 80,000 square feet of amenities; and of the safety manager who "babysits grown men" to keep them safe hundreds of feet in the air.

Summary:
"Do It Yourself" investigates the history behind the current do-it-yourself craze in home repair and remodeling. The origins of home improvement can be traced to the early part of the century, when government loan programmes placed home ownership within the reach of growing numbers of families, mass-circulation magazines began providing their readers with information about home renovation, and increasing numbers of Americans turned to the manual arts and handicrafts as leisure-time pursuits. World War II provided many Americans with the skills and confidence to undertake home-improvement projects on their own, and after the war, changes in the manufacturing and retailing of tools and equipment created new possibilities for transforming one's home. The text of "Do It Yourself", which investigates topics ranging from women's roles in home repair to historic preservation, is a lively mix of illustrations--including period photographs, magazine spreads, and advertisements--and clearly written analysis of the trends

Summary:
Omnipresent, essential to life, the little-known living organisms that are trees have begun to generate a growing interest on behalf of the public, as evidenced by the international success of several recent books and movies devoted to the subject. Underestimated by biologists for a long time—like the entirety of the plant kingdom—in recent years they have been the subject of scientific discoveries that have allowed us to see these organisms in a new light. Interestingly, some of these are amongst the oldest and largest members of this community of living things. Boasting sensory and motor skills, capable of communication, existing in symbiosis with other species and the climate, trees are equipped with unexpected faculties whose discovery confirms what traditional knowledge has long since incorporated. The veil has been lifted on a fascinating world—the world of ‘plant intelligence’—which could be the answer to many of today’s technological and environmental problems.

Summary:
One of the most influential photographers of his generation, Ansel Adams (1902–1984) is famous for his dramatic photographs of the American West. Although many of Adams’s images are now iconic, his early work has remained largely unknown. In this first monograph dedicated to the beginnings of Adams’s career, Rebecca A. Senf argues that these early photographs are crucial to understanding Adams’s artistic development and offer new insights into many aspects of the artist’s mature oeuvre. Drawing on copious archival research, Senf traces the first three decades of Adams’s photographic practice—beginning with an amateur album made during his childhood and culminating with his Guggenheim-supported National Parks photography of the 1940s. Highlighting the artist’s persistence in forging a career path and his remarkable ability to learn from experience as he sharpened his image-making skills, this beautifully illustrated volume also looks at the significance of the artist’s environmentalism, including his involvement with the Sierra Club.

Summary:
Between 1919 and 1933, the Bauhaus thrived as a school of ideas that encouraged students to experiment with material, colour, and drawing techniques and learn basic skills. One hundred years later, its educational methods are still relevant. This book introduces the famous Foundation course and its major instructors: Joseph Albers, Johannes Itten, and László Moholy-Nagy. It offers for the first time a series of more than fifty exercises from the Foundation Course. The book presents a collection of exercises gathered from historical material, mainly from the Bauhaus-Archiv such as drawings, photographs, original notes, and later recollections of the tasks given by the famous Bauhaus artists. The exercises are accompanied by comments by teachers, artists, and experts with different professional backgrounds. These teachings illustrate not only the methods and philosophy of the Bauhaus school, but also provide budding artists with a foundation for developing their own practice, whether it be in drawing, architecture, design, or typography.

Summary:
Palladio (1508-80) combined classical restraint with constant inventiveness. In this study, Professor Ackerman sets Palladio in the context of his age - the Humanist era of Michelangelo and Raphael, Titian and Veronese - and examines each of the villas, churches and palaces in turn and tries to penetrate to the heart of the Palladian miracle. Palladio's theoretical writings are important and illuminating, he suggests, yet they never do justice to the intense intuitive skills of "a magician of light and colour". Indeed, as the photographs in this book reveal, Palladio was "as sensual, as skilled in visual alchemy as any Venetian painter of his time", and his countless imitators have usually captured the details, but not the essence of his style. There are buildings all the way from Philadelphia to Leningrad which bear witness to Palladio's "permanent place in the making of architecture", yet he also deserves to be seen on his own terms.

Summary:
Swiss graphic design and “the Swiss Style” are crucial elements in the history of modernism. During the 1920s and ’30s, skills traditionally associated with Swiss industry, particularly pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering, were matched by those of the country’s graphic designers, who produced their advertising and technical literature. These pioneering graphic artists saw design as part of industrial production and searched for anonymous, objective visual communication. They chose photographic images rather than illustration, and typefaces that were industrial-looking rather than those designed for books. This volume looks at graphic language developed by such Swiss designers as Theo Ballmer, Max Bill, Adrian Frutiger, Karl Gerstner, Armin Hoffman, Ernst Keller, Herbert Matter, Josef Müller-Brockmann, and Jan Tschichold. The style of these artists received worldwide admiration for its formal discipline : images and text were organized by geometrical grids. Adopted internationally, the grid and sans serif typefaces such as Helvetica became the classic emblems of Swiss graphic design. This book shows design work across a range of media, including posters, magazines, exhibition displays, brochures, advertisements, books, and film.

Summary:
Tour guides are a vital part of New York's raucous sidewalk culture, and, as "The Tour Guide" reveals, the tours they offer are as fascinatingly diverse - and eccentric - as the city itself. Visitors can take tours that cover Manhattan before the arrival of European settlers, the nineteenth-century Irish gangs of Five Points, the culinary traditions of Queens, the culture of Harlem, or even the surveillance cameras of Chelsea - in short, there are tours to satisfy anyone's curiosity about the city's past or present. And the guides are as intriguing as the subjects, we learn, as Jonathan R. Wynn explores the lives of the people behind the tours, introducing us to office workers looking for a diversion from their desk jobs, unemployed actors honing their vocal skills, and struggling retirees searching for a second calling. Matching years of research with his own experiences as a guide, Wynn also lays bare the grueling process of acquiring an official license and offers a how-to guide to designing and leading a tour.

Summary:
Visiting the villas of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508-80), one inevitably asks oneself how people actually occupied them. Palladio conceived his villas as ''small towns'' (piccole città) that formed a single unit with adjacent service buildings and farm fields. Within their walls lived people of all ages, social backgrounds and skills. These buildings were the venue for significant moments of public life, and the principles of hygiene, privacy and comfort, which we consider so defining and essential today, did not apply- in a sense furniture as such did not exist. ''Living with Palladio in the sixteenth century'' investigates how Palladio’s houses, their floors, rooms and measurements, were designed to structure the life of such a heterogeneous family of people. It analyses their hierarchical structure with the owner (padrone) at the top and everyone involved in the everyday running of the household (famiglia minuta) at the bottom. This book fills a decisive gap in research literature on the famous Italian architect by looking at how Palladio prioritized the domestic functions of his private buildings.

Summary:
Like a ship cast on the shore by some Mediterranean tempest, the E 1027 house, built in 1929 by legendary Irish designer Eileen Gray with and for her architect friend Jean Badovici, was little more, seventy years later, than a desolate wreck. But since 2014 an exceptional combination of the knowledge and skills of a whole host of architects and historians, coupled with a harmonious collaboration between public authorities and private initiative, have succeeded in setting the building afloat again. E 1027 can now be seen with all the beauty of its original lines, a white vessel emerging from a lemon grove with its blue awning as a sail. Up till now only familiar through the black and white pictures of the albums of its time, its interiors bring together ingenious pieces of furniture and a collection of chairs, lamps and mirrors which have acquired iconic status, and which have been meticulously restored. The heart of this book is a guided tour through this resuscitated architectural masterpiece, with details of its remarkable furnishings and decoration, all illustrated with the photographs of Manuel Bougot.
