Sub-file documents unexecuted projects for the Tate Gallery New Museums, in London, England. These additions to the Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain) were planned in several phases, to be constructed as funding was made available. The proposals included the Museum of Modern Sculpture, the Museum of New Art and a Study Centre to be erected on the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital site, situated to the east of the main Tate Gallery building. A Children's Museum was also planned. The New Museums projects were called off in 1987. Material in this Sub-file was produced between 1979 and 1988. Sub-file contains measured and reference drawings, several conceptual and design development drawings as well as presentation drawings. Photographic materials include views of drawings and of a presentation model by Kandor Modelmakers. Sub-file also contains textual records.

Series 1, Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1990-1996, documents the design, conception and construction of a third bridge for Rotterdam over the Nieuwe Maas River. The bridge connects the Kop van Zuid neighborhood, located on the south side of the river, to Willemsplein, located on the north side. The bridge is considered as a landmark in Rotterdam’s landscape. The Erasmus Bridge was a formative project in the thinking of UNStudio. It was originally supposed to be designed by architect Maarten Struijs who was the city of Rotterdam principal architect and who is responsible for the concept of the neighboring Willem Bridge. Ben van Berkel came later into the project and was hired as a designing consultant along with architect Wim Quist. Ben van Berkel proposed design was selected allowing him and his firm, which was called Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau at that time, to supervise the conception and construction of the project, from the original concept to piers design to the selection of every item of bridge furniture such as traffic lights, bridge camera and handrails. The bridge was designed to fit the distinct character and industrial past of Rotterdam. The construction of this landmark was one component of a larger redevelopment project, coinciding with other major developments in the city of Rotterdam. The goal was to develop a dense urban intervention on the southern shore of the Nieuwe Maas, in the Kop van Zuid neighborhood. This explains the implication of UNStudio in the planning of urban configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river and their work for Spido, a ferry company operating on the Nieuwe Maas, work spaces and parking garage. This commercial building was designed by the firm and also hosts The Grand Café and Jazz Café. This commercial building is integrated to one of the bridge pillar on the north shore of the river. For the design the firm used AutoCAD to work along with engineers and to conceptualize 3D models. They also used the software to evaluate the circulation flow of drivers, pedestrians and streetcars, measuring its impact on the structure and the urban configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river. The records contain sketches for bridge and pier design, plans and sections for pier, Spido and bridge, architectural and construction details created by engineering companies for every component of the bridge, from drawbridge, to cable car system, to bridge furnitures such as traffic light, handrails and cameras and photographs documenting the research for precedent and the original configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river. Project records consist of records documenting the three phases of the Synthetic Landscape project (1995-2000) as worked on by Johan Bettum and OCEAN North. The project was initially developed and submitted in 1995 for the Membrane Design International Competition held in Japan by the Taiyo Kogyo Corporation. The entry showcases a children’s playscape in the setting of Oslo’s Tøyen Park, joining both its urban surroundings and its natural landscape into a synthetic space. Afterwards, the project was exhibited at the Architecture Association (AA) in London, where Johan Bettum and Kivi Sotamaa met. This eventually led to Bettum and Sotamaa collaborating on projects, along with their respective OCEAN teams in Oslo and Helsinki. The Synthetic Landscape project continued as a research project, with a second phase in 1996 and a third phase which ran from 1997 through 2000 and integrated design methods (particle streaming, Channelling Systems) from the work made on the Töölö and Jyväskylä projects. In the third phase, a pavilion was also added to the setting. Aside from one drawing, all records for this project are in a digital format. Drawings and models from phase 1 show parts or the whole of a shell-like structure. A color scheme seems to be associated to the different components of the structure. A report on phases 1 and 2 discusses the use of synthetic and composite materials for the structure, explaining the concept for the site. Phase 2 textual records include a working plan, site charts and program. Additional drawings and models show an evolution in the shape of the landscape. Most records are related to the third phase of Synthetic Landscape. They are largely drawings and models showing textures and coloured grafts used in the design process, section and surfaces studies, as well as site plans. Other files of the third phase consist of animated renderings of Channelling Systems studies within the Synthetic Landscape topology, saved as Quicktime MOV files. Additionally, the third phase of Synthetic Landscape has files related to the FEM (finite element method) analysis process utilized in the project’s engineering. This particular section includes raster images showing vectorial drawings and data appearing to be surface studies. These were likely created with the software Mathematica. The bulk of textual documentation on the project’s scope and outcomes may be found in AP194.S1.1995.PR01.001 for phases 1 and 2, and in AP194.S1.1995.PR01.005 for phase 3. The latter file also contains documentation related to a grant application to The Research Council of Norway; a proposal for a conference and exhibition at the AA; and administrative records such as budgets, correspondence, invoices, progress reports, meeting agendas and minutes. Description:
Oud was one of a number of architects invited to enter the competition for the new offices of the Province of South Holland, a complex due to replace the bombed headquarters on Korte Voorhout. The design for the new site – located on the grounds of a former zoo – was required to conform to the reconstruction plan of the architect-town planner, W.M. Dudok. Oud designed a four-storey building that conformed to building requirement and located the buildings at the southwest corner of the site to accommodate the existing zoo. The governor's residence was also designed, and another two office wings were placed at right angles to the main concentration of buildings. Ultimately, to Oud's great disappointment, the jury selected a design by Peutz for its complex (Taverne et al. 2001, 453-456). Project series includes photographs of perspective drawings and of a model.
